Vikings fall to Polar Bears

The Floodwood Polar Bears came to Grand Marais for an intense Polar League and Section 7A matchup. They escaped with a 57-51 nail biter win.

A back and forth contest was blown open in the last 3 minutes of the first half, when the Polar Bears went on a 9-2 run to close the half. The Bears went into the half with a 34-25 lead, behind 14 points from senior Alissa Autio. Junior Ashley Deschampe led the Vikings with 17 points to keep the game close, including both of her 3’s. The Vikings jumped out on a nice 7-0 run to start the 2nd half and put the game into see-saw mode for the duration of the game, with Brea Boomer scoring 7 of the Vikings first 9 points. With the Polar Bears clinging to a 50-48 lead, the Vikings failed to convert on 3 straight possessions, missing close shots and put backs alike. The Polar Bears last 7 points came from the free throw stripe while the Vikings had to stop the clock and the Bears made enough to finish off the 57-51 win. Autio led the Polar Bears with 20 points and numerous blocks, while junior Molli Durovec chipped in 13 points. Ashley Deschampe led all scorers with 29 and Boomer added 15 points for Cook County. The win move the Polar Bears record to 11-4 while the loss drops the Vikings record to 11-2, with a quick chance to redeem themselves tomorrow in Ely at 1:00.
