Girls Basketball Scores Points! Congrats Coach Super on your 100th victory as a head coach!!
The Cook County Vikings had a week of practice for the first time in a long time and they used it to sharpen up for the visiting Duluth Marshall Hilltoppers. The Vikes came out smoking hot, notching steal after steal and converting on the offensive end with great cutting and passing. Theresa Morrin played very aggressive, taking it to the basket and creating contact. Senior Ashley Deschampe drove like a machine on a mission, getting fouled and making all 10 of her free throw attempts. She didn’t miss a shot until there was about a minute left in the half, totaling 23 in the first half to lead the Vikings to a 52-14 lead at the break. The half was highlighted by the fast break opportunities the Vikings created with their team hustle up the court. In what has been a staple of the past years teams at Cook County, the Vikes have struggled to get their running game going a bit this year, but the girls were firing on all cylinders tonight.
The Vikings slowed it down in the 2nd half but still played solid defense. They did a much better job boxing out and clearing boards and drove well and dumped it to cutters for easy shots. Deschampe slowed down her scoring but picked it up in other areas, finishing the game with a double-double at 28 points and 10 rebounds, while adding 6 assists and 4 steals. Four other girls were at or around double figures for the Vikes, including junior Leah Utities who was just back from a week long sickness, but sucked it up and played with intensity all night. It was a good win for the Vikings as they improve their record to 13-8, with a quick turnaround with a big Section 7A game in Floodwood tomorrow night at 4:45. The Vikings return home next Friday night when the Wrenshall Wrens come to town for a boys/girls double header, come on out and support the Vikings.
On a personal note, I need to send out a big thank you to the Cook County Viking fans for celebrating my 100th win as a head coach. In my 6 years here, I’ve had a lot of people offer a lot of support to the girls, the program, and to me. I do need to really, really, really thank the rest of the coaching staff in John Jacobsen, Kim Linnell, Kelly Roberts, and Rachel Seim. Those guys are the ones that get a lot of stuff done in the background and it doesn’t get noticed, but I can’t state how much I appreciate it and how much of an impact it has on the program. If you see them around, make sure you congratulate them, too, because without them, this wouldn’t have been possible. Thanks.
