The Cook County Vikings traveled to Esko to play Lakeview Christian Academy in their first playoff game Thursday night. The Vikings beat L.C.A. in the first game of the season 72-12. The vaunted Viking press picked up right where it left off that night by converting many steals into fastbreak layups. Ailee Larson pushed the tempo, leading the break on many occasions by beating the Lions down the court for easy buckets. Christina Nelson and Brea Boomer did some scoring of their own but spread the wealth, leading the Vikings with 7 and 6 assists, respectively. Larson hit a late 3 to push the lead to 52-9 at halftime.
The 2nd half slowed down as the Vikings pulled off their press completely, after loosening the noose with a couple minutes left in the 1st half. After 29 first half turnovers the Lions were able to control the ball and get more shots off in the 2nd half, but the Vikings did a good job boxing out and grabbing the defensive boards. The depleted Viking bench kept up the defensive intensity when they played a bunch of minutes, getting in the passing lane and tipping passes and getting steals. The Vikings ended the game with 38 steals, one shy of the school record 39 they had against L.C.A. the first time they played. The final score was 77-16 with Boomer leading the Vikings with 22 points, while Larson added 18, Nelson 14, and Deschampe 10. The Vikings advance to play against Cherry at 6:00 at Duluth Denfeld High School on Saturday.
