TITLE: SEASONAL DEPUTY SHERIFF
FUNCTION: Works under the direction and supervision of the Cook County Sheriff and/or designee as assigned. Patrols the Superior National Forest during the busy summer tourism season. Enforces laws, rules, and ordinances. Responds to calls for assistance. Completes reports and paperwork. Performs other general law enforcement duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: Applicants must possess Minnesota P.O.S.T. certification as a Licensed Peace Officer as well as a valid driver’s license. Candidates who are MN POST-eligible but do not yet have an active license will also be considered. Must pass a comprehensive background check and demonstrate successful completion of physical and psychological exams upon conditional job offer. Must also possess the ability to make good decisions and work independently, to meet the public in a courteous and professional manner, to handle equipment and difficult situations in isolated forest areas with no immediate back-up, to maintain good working relationships with supervisors and others, and to perform essential job duties with or without reasonable accommodation.
STATUS OF POSITION: Cook County has a vacancy for the 2017 summer season. This temporary position will work 40 hours per week during assigned shifts (including days, nights, weekends, and holidays) from May through September. Current salary range: Step 1; $22.78 – Step 15; $30.09 per hour. Position provides professional liability and workers compensation coverage, but no other county benefits.

Applicants must also submit documentation of their MN POST eligibility in order to be considered for the position. The best-qualified applicants will be selected for interview by the Cook County Sheriff.
