Awesome start to the New Year for Silver Bay/Cook County Youth Hockey!
The Peewees kicked off the New Year on Saturday with a very physical game in Hermantown and came home with a victory, a few bruises and final score of 4 - 1.
Then Sunday the Peewees hosted the Duluth East Black team. We quickly took the lead in the first period but Duluth East came out strong in the 2nd and we were behind 2 - 5 going into the 3rd. The home team then rallied early in the 3rd period and before we knew it the score was 5 - 6. In the last seconds of the game JJ Ketola put one through the pipes and the peewees were headed for overtime! There were plenty of shots on goal in the 8 minute overtime period but the East goalie stayed strong and the game then ended in a 6 - 6 tie! This group is having a really great season with a current record of 8 - 2- 1 and they head to a tournament this next weekend in Hibbing to take on teams from all over the state. Keep up the good work boys!
The Squirts looked awesome on Sunday when they hosted the Hermantown Blue team. It was a very exciting game with lots of skating, passing, shooting and scoring! These teams were a good match and this game ended in a 3 - 3 tie. Nice work Squirts and skate hard at your next game on Saturday in Cloquet.
The 12U girls hosted the tough team from Proctor on Sunday afternoon. They really wanted a good performace as they lost to them by 1 goal the last time these two teams met. Well today they were not going to let that happen! The girls were on fire and found themselves on top early in the game. Proctor answered back midway through the 2nd period and then took the lead. The Silver Bay/Cook County/Two Harbors girls were playing aggressive and tied it up in the 3rd and this game was headed for overtime! With coach Jim Roy's voice getting raspier and raspier local favorite Carrie Palmer put one through the pipes off a sweet pass by Everly Bauck and the girls claim victory with a final score of 3 - 2!! This team is headed to Apple Valley this next weekend for a tournament and are sure to represent the North Shore well. Good Luck girls!!
The Bantams headed to Fryberger Arena in Duluth today to take on the tough Duluth East Red team. This facility is what we in the hockey world affectionately call "Freeze-Burger", it is one of the coldest indoor facilities to watch a game from in the area, when it is single digits outside you know it is going to be a cold one inside. This Bantam team has been fairly dominate most of the season but had a good game today as it was tied up at 3 - 3 going into the 3rd. They came out strong in the 3rd, kept Duluth East Red from scoring and put two more through the pipes to claim a final 5 - 3 victory at "Freeze-Burger"! This group of kids are always fun to watch and we can expect plenty more victories from them this season.
There is always plenty of exciting hockey action happening in Silver Bay so when you are headed up or down the Shore be sure to check out the arena schedule: http://www.silverbay.com/arenasch2weeks.html and a youth hockey game!
