In-School Immunization Clinic

Menactra and Tdap Vaccines Available for 7-12th graders at ISD 166.

As part of a Public Health Emergency Preparedness exercise, Sawtooth Mountain Clinic will be running a vaccine clinic at ISD 166 on Sept. 17th from 9-11.  Menactra and Tdap vaccines will be available at no cost to students who are due.  A signed consent form will be required.  Please contact Kay, school nurse, to inquire about consent forms.

Make-a-Bowl for Empty Bowls!

Are you part of a small group or looking for a team building activity?

Think about participating in an Empty Bowls Make-a-Bowl session!

There are more than 100 families that use the local foodshelf every month. That is why, annually, the Art Colony supports the Empty Bowls Dinner, a community fundraiser to alleviate local hunger needs.

Make-a-Bowl for Empty Bowls | $5 per person | All ages and levels

Every Sunday, Sept. 14 - Oct. 12, 2014: 2 pm
Every Monday, Sept. 15 - Oct. 13, 2014: 7 pm

At the Art Colony Make-a-Bowl sessions, community members make one hand-built and one wheel-thrown bowl to donate to the dinner event. This is a great way to come together with neighbors and friends to ensure that others can have a hot meal on a cold fall evening as well.  Pre-registration required.

The Art of Seeing: Developing a Visual Literacy | Hazel Belvo

September 13 | 10am - 11am | Johnson Heritage Post | Open to All Ages | $5 suggested donation

Develop your art appreciation skills and come out to view the Plein Air Grand Marais Exhibit at the Johnson Heritage Post with Hazel Belvo. Hazel will facilitate a group conversation and reflection on the exhibit while guiding participants in ways to interact with and respond to artwork. 


Wire Wrapped Jewelry | Kim Knutson

September 19 | 10am – 2:30pm | Tuition: $40

Kim will guide students in learning about the tools, materials, and techniques used to create earrings, neck pieces, bracelets, and rings that friends will oooh and aaaah over. Students are invited to bring any of their own stones or beads as they learn to create unique jewelry from fantastic finds. For ages 9 – 12.


Drawing | Grandpa David Hahn and John Franz

September 29 – October 13 | 3 Mondays | 4 – 5pm | Tuition: $20

Students will learn the basics of drawing as David and John use still life to teach a variety of techniques including 3-D, realism, and landscape. Drawing is the foundation of all art media, so jump-in and build skills that will last a lifetime. For ages 6 – 8.

Health Care Directives, sometimes called advanced directives, are legal documents that describe your healthcare wishes should you become unable to communicate your decisions.  It provides peace of mind for you and your loved ones when confronted with end-of-life health care decisions as well as appoints a health care agent (substitute decision maker) to make treatment decisions on your behalf if necessary.  Cook County North Shore Hospital and Care Center can assist you with the creation of a directive or help update your existing directive.  Contact Hilja at 387-3261.

Paddle to DC A Quest for Clean Water in GRAND MARAIS Today!

Welcome National Geographic Adventures of the Year Dave and Amy Freeman when they sail into Grand Marais on their way to Washington DC. Join them for pizza and other yummy treats as well as information about Paddle to DC and Sulfide Mining.  Hear stories about the rst 10 days of their 100 day journey to DC, celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Wilderness Act, and the clean water and wild spaces that abound in North Eastern Minnesota.

Local band BUGHOUSE! will perform tonight on the rooftop bar at the Gun Flint Tavern, from 6:30-9:30 pm.  

BUGHOUSE! features Rod "Little Daddy" Dockan, Al "The Iron Finn" Oikari, and drummer Derek Smith, of local band Cook County's Most Wanted, joined by bass player John "Bing" Mianowski.
