Summer is here...hurry and get your picnic stuff...

We do have picnic stuff, from the genuine picnic basket just like Dorothy had in the Wizard of Oz  to plastic containers and even brown paper bags...whatever works!  We have table cloths (the oil cloth kind), lovely picnic dishes and glassware (er plasticware) for your favorite drinks.  Lemonade pitchers, tableware (that means knives, forks etc.)... and don't forget umbrellas...we have them, too!

You are one ant short of a picnic if you don't bring along tether ball, or other games... or in-line (on line?) skates, some fishing equipment, and a Good Book.  We probably have what you are looking for including totes to carry all the stuff you need.

Maybe you want to just sit on your deck....  need chairs?  We have them.  How about tables?  We even have a metal Pub table.

Just in:

  • Rattan or wicker occasional chairs
  • new bath/shower surround
  • book shelves (or, with imagination, things you can make into bookshelves)
  • medicine cabinet with a mirror
  • cool cabinet that could be for medicine without a mirror
  • Very nice French doors.

Plus....  we have table leafs..or is it leaves?  priced extremely low because we have no tables to go with them!   AND WE HAVE SHUTTERS.... many sizes both plastic and wood. They aren't just for windows any more, you know.  There are those who have made headboards out of them.  I shutter to think about it.

Stop in the coffee is always on and the welcome is always warm!!

Arrowhead Sketchers Meet-Up This Thursday!

Arrowhead sketchers will meet on Thursday, June 23, at the public boat landing in the Grand Marais RV park at 5:30. (From Highway 61, take West 8th Avenue toward Lake Superior.)  We will sketch in this area of the harbor and RV park. If the weather in bad, we’ll meet in the picnic shelter adjacent to the public landing at 5:30. We’ll sketch for an hour and one-half or so, then gather to share sketches and the experience. All are welcome, regardless of skill level, chosen medium, and age.

Did your power go out and leave you in the dark?

.....Too bad you hadn't shopped at ODDZ & ENDZ before that last storm!  We had candles, lanterns, maybe even a flashlight or two.....  and we have BOOKS..

RECIPE books are my favorite.  I can't cook (when I walk into the kitchen the smoke alarm goes off in self defense!)...but I can read! The best are the church cook books, and we have representation of churches from  around the country, including Cook County. They are a mix of history, tid bits of news, corrections, and special recipes handwritten in the margins. Then there are the "specialty" cook books; cookies, bread, more cookies, holiday cooking, diet, non-diet, and road-kill.  There are recipe books for novice, experienced and children and then, of course there are the usual Betty Crocker, Emeril, etc. books designed for learning how to cook.

BIOGRAPHIES and AUTOBIOGRAPHIES...everyone from Lawrence Welk to Sarah Palin. (no kidding)...

HOW to BOOKs... need to build a deck, learn to sail, design a house, paint an oyster shell?  How about crochet, or how to play croquet (you figure out the difference). You can learn how to tame a horse, detick a dog, neuter a hedgehog (well maybe not that)..plumb a sink, unclog a drain.... whatever you need, it is here!

FICTION.. sappy love stories where you know on the first page who Mr. Hunk really is... mysteries. who done it... spy novels... espionage... humor (think Garrison Keillor).

NON-FICTION  historical, political, spiritual, adventure

              and of course

SELF-HELP  we have those on the top shelf so that you have to ask for help to get them down.

Jack Williams at ACA July 9

Don't miss the North Shore Music Association's next great concert event:

JACK WILLIAMS        July 9 at 7:30 PM

Arrowhead Center for the Arts  -  51 W. 5th St. Grand Marais

Tickets are general admission: $17 adults, $5 youth (18 & under). For sale in advance at (search "Arrowhead Center for the Arts"). Also for sale at the door (box office opens 6:30 PM)

Jack Williams is considered a "musician's musician," an uncommonly unique guitarist, a writer of vivid songs with a strong sense of place, and a storyteller in an old Southern tradition who further illustrates each tale with his guitar. Rich Warren of WFMT Chicago's The Midnight Special says of Jack, "His artistry is nothing short of amazing. Dazzling picking, expressive voice, unique and interesting songs. He is a showman in the best sense of the word and just wowed our audience. I think they would have followed him anywhere." Vic Heyman, in SING OUT! magazine, writes, "He is one of the strongest guitar players in contemporary folk."

Jack has nine CDs of original music on the Wind River (Folk Era) label. His songs have been recorded by artists ranging from Tom Jones and David Clayton-Thomas to Chuck Pyle, Cindy Mangsen, Ronny Cox, and Lowen & Navarro. In addition to his solo career, as a guitarist he has accompanied such luminaries as Tom Paxton, Peter Yarrow (of Peter, Paul & Mary), Mickey Newbury, and Harry Nilsson.

Volunteers Needed

Chik-Wauk Museum and Nature Center are looking for volunteers to help out either in our Museum or in the Nature Center.

Volunteers are a huge part of Chik-Wauk's success. You do not need to have a naturalist background to help at the Nature Center. If you like working with children and enjoy seeing their eyes light up when they start to explore and learn about all the different aspects of nature on the Gunflint Trail, you would be a great addition. We are looking for volunteers any day of the week from 11 am to 3 pm all summer long.

If you would be interested or have questions about volunteering in either location please feel free to call the Museum at 218-388-9915 or send me an email at

Thank you I hope you will consider volunteering at Chik-Wauk Museum and Nature Center this season.
