VOTE Grand Marais for "Best Town EVER" - an Outside Magazine Contest

Grand Marais has been nominated by social media followers to compete for its second “top town” title in two years. Outside Magazine asked its Instagram followers to nominate their favorite towns to add to their curated list of 60 towns. Four towns, out of 800 submissions, were selected to particpate in the larger competition for a total of 64 towns.

The contest is organized by the type of town—river, culture, beach, and mountain towns will compete against each other until there's one of each remaining. Then they'll face each other for the overall title.

“Grand Marais is competing in the ‘beach’ category,” says Linda Kratt, executive director of Visit Cook County. “First, we have to win against the other beach towns. Then we’ll compete against winners of other categories.

You can vote daily during the five day match-up, so mark your calendars to visit this site ( ) by 11 p.m. on April 29; again April 30 - May 4, May 5 - 9, May 10 - 14, May 15 - 19, and May 20 - 27.

Other beach competitors include: Bayfield, Wis.; Fairhope, Ala.; Bellingham, Wash.; Milwaukee, Wis.; Bolinas, Calif.; Cape May, N.J.; Ludington, Mich.; Los Angeles, Calif.; Yachats, Ore.; Miami, Fla.; Duxbury, Mass.; Pacific Grove, Calif.; Islamadora, Fla.; Wilmington, N.C.; and Ketchikan, Alaska.

Phil Heywood & Tim Sparks - May 21

Award-winning fingerstyle guitarist Phil Heywood returns to the Arrowhead Center for the Arts -- this time sharing a bill with his equally amazing guitarist friend, Tim Sparks. Listen to them perform together here:

Phil Heywood & Tim Sparks - Full Moon Concert

Sat. May 21 - 7:30 PM

Arrowhead Center for the Arts - 51 W. 5th St. Grand Marais

Tickets: $20 adults, $5 youth (18 & under), for sale at (no fees) or at box office night of show (6:30 PM)

Phil Heywood plays guitar with a bluesy swing and ear-bending clarity and lyricism. He's a soul-satisfying instrumentalist who can grab listeners with his voice as well, singing in a warm, plainspoken baritone that blends smoothly with his rock-solid guitar work. His music encompasses the down-home rhythmic groove of a Mississippi John Hurt or Leadbelly, and the sheer fluidity and melodic flair of such contemporaries as internationally renowned guitarist Leo Kottke, who once handpicked Phil to tour and perform duets with him. Listen to Phil here:

April Showers at O&E brings....

...May (be) more potholes in the parking lot.  But don't worry we are working on it.  Thinking of planting a tree in each pot hole...our answer to reforestation.

Soon we can make it somewhat better, but don't let the speed holes stop you...(just slow you down)! Come in and see all the new stuff!

Sofas and matching chair,  desk, end tables, tables and cool chairs, spring buys, blown glass thingys, more pictures, cool mirrors, knick knacks....and more knick knacks...

Take a look at our Sailing and Boat welcoming room.... (never to late to start planning for spring and summer lake fun)...

We even have an OLD IRON (to look at) and a NEW IRON (to use...or to look at)...  PLUS

WE HAVE IRONING BOARDS....   you  know those things that we put clothes on to iron the wrinkles out.... But THINK... if you lower them, they are a great craft table and you can easily hang it up on the back of a door when you are done!  Or.... iron sitting down.

Since it has been a little cold (A LITTLE???? COLD) you might want to take advantage of the quilts, and warm blankets that we took back out thinking it was spring.

Did you know that in Cook County history  every day of the year (except one) has at one time or another had snow.  If you know what that one day is, tell me....I will go on a picnic!!)

Coffee is still on:  not ready yet for iced tea!  Mondays 11-6; Tues, Fri and Sat, 10-4.  WE ARE EAGERLY WAITING FOR YOU!!
