(Harp-free) Harpeth Rising 8/20

There are no harps played in the band HARPETH RISING.

The female trio, named for the Harpeth River in Middle Tennessee, could be described as "modern progressive bluegrass" or "chamberfolk," but these titles only touch on their unique sound. These three classically trained musicians produce original music that's intricately arranged, lyrically rooted in the singer/songwriter tradition, wrapped in three-part vocal harmonies reminiscent of both Appalachia and Medieval Europe, and evocative of the gypsy jazz of Django Reinhardt and the "dawg music" of David Grisman. Building from the tonal depth of the cello, layered with shimmering violin and strikingly natural banjo, they create a sound that's at once familiar and impossible to categorize.

LISTEN to them now:

Chris Spector at Midwest Record says Harpeth Rising is "taking Newgrass to the next dimension, taking back lyric writing as an art form. If you've cleaned your ears out recently, this set is going to blow your mind. One of a kind, in a class by itself and simply superlative."

HARPETH RISING     August 20 - 7:30 pm

Arrowhead Center for the Arts  -  51 West 5th St. Grand Marais

Tickets: General admission $18 adult, $15 adult/youth pair (Receive a $3 discount if you bring a youth, 18 or under, redeemable at box office!) Additional youth get in free.

Authors, beach, conversation, poetry--Join us!

Writer's Salon with Kim Alan Chapman and James Armstrong, authors of the book "Nature, Culture, and Two Friends Talking".

Saturday, July 23rd at 5 PM

Drury Lane Books, at the end of Wisconsin street on the East bay of Lake Superior.

A book of conversations and ideas about the natural world and our place in it, told in essays, email exchanges, and poetry by two friends, one a poet and naturalist, the other an ecologist and writer. Their thoughts and words reflect society’s evolution from the 1980s to the present in how conservation and the environment are imagined.

Join us at Drury Lane Books to hear Kim and Jim read from their book and share conversation on the natural world. Plan to sit outside if the weather is nice!

Kim Chapman has been working in conservation biology for over 30 years; he is currently a consulting ecologist with Applied Ecological Services. He has worked on hundreds of projects in the Midwest that try to find the balance between conservation and development. He is the co-author and editor of Valley of Grass (North Star Press).

James Armstrong has been writing about nature and culture for 30 years. He is the author of two books of poetry, Monument in a Summer Hat (New Issues Press) and Blue Lash (Milkweed Press). He teaches poetry, film and literature of the environment in the English Department at Winona State University.
