Congratulations to the North Shore Bantams on bringing home 1st place hardware from a tournament in Ashland this weekend!
The Cook County Vikings played the Two Harbors Agates in early December in their fourth game of the season. It was the Vikings’ first lost and the start of a 5 game losing streak in which there were many changes made to the lineup, mostly due to injury but ended up solidifying the lineup. The Vikings welcomed those same Two Harbors Agates and once again struggled to start the game. In a very physical perimeter game, drives and shots were hard to come by and definitely hard to make. The Vikes shot at a 30% clip in the 1st half and took a 33-26 lead into the break. Ashley Deschampe led the Vikings with 11 points while Lacey Myrdal had 10 for the Agates in the frame.
The Vikings came out with a renewed spirit after trading a couple baskets. The Vikings turned up the press and went on a huge 26-7 run to take a big advantage. A lull was followed by another spurt where the Vikes put the game away. Deschampe scored 14 of the first 18 points for the Vikings and Bekah Laky heated up to help finish things off 77-53. With three Vikings ending their home careers, in Molly Zafft who is out for the year and Bekah Laky and Ashley Deschampe, it was a good way for the seniors to go out. Laky finished the game with 15 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 assists. Deschampe ended with a game high 27 points and 5 steals. 8th grader Lily Gruber-Schulz finished with a double-double, with 17 rebounds and 10 points, adding 4 blocks. Junior Leah Utities scored in double figures for a 4th straight game with 10 points while she chipped in 7 rebounds. Breana Peterson played a scrappy floor game, with 5 steals, 5 assists, and 4 rebounds. The win puts an end to the Vikings regular season at 16-8, including 13-3 the last 16 games, heading into playoffs. There will be a playoff preview and senior summary out early next week to get us into the next season, the post season.
