The Cook County Vikings traveled the long road to McGregor to take on the mighty Mercs. They have a very young team, led by their very good and quick point guard Abby Hawkinson. The Vikings started out very sluggish, reminiscent of the game at McGregor two years ago. The Mercs jumped out to a quick 14-7 lead, beating the Vikings down the court and scoring on close, easy shots. The Vikes struggled to take care of the ball (12 turnovers) and when they were able to get the ball up the court they couldn’t make even the easiest of layups (4-27 shooting, 14%). The Mercs finished the half on a 4-0 run and took a 27-13 lead at the break.
The Vikings came out with much more intensity to start the 2nd half, but the Mercs benefited by scoring on some loose balls that just bounced their way. Trailing 32-17, senior Ashley Deschampe took over the game. Scoring 16 of the next 21 points and assisting on the other two Viking baskets, the Vikes pulled back into the game and tied it up at 38 with a Dish 3. Stifling defense by Breana Peterson, and great rebounding by Bekah Laky, Theresa Morrin, and Kaitlynn Linnell led to fast break opportunities by Dish and senior Molly Zafft. Back and forth action ensued, highlighted by girls knocking down shots on both teams. Leading 53-52, Zafft hit a turnaround jumper to push the lead to 3. The Mercs came down and scored a couple of free throws to cut into the lead, but Deschampe stepped up and knocked down two free throws of her own to push the lead back up to 3. Gretchen Grams was fouled with 9 seconds left and the Vikings leading by 3. She made the first one but missed the second one and Bekah Laky came up with a big board. Theresa Morrin was fouled and went to line. She missed both shots and the Mercs had one final chance but Hawkinson’s 3 clanged off the rim and the Vikings escaped with a 57-55 victory.
