Vikings vs. Silver Bay Basketball - click here for details and scores

The Cook County Vikings met up with the young Silver Bay Mariners and the Vikings took care of business. A stifling defense led to many easy buckets and good, unselfish play in the fast break resulted in a lot of girls notching their names in book. The Vikings took a 56-6 lead into the half and finished with a 72-20 win. Ashley Deschampe led the Vikings with 28 points, 26 coming in the first half. Bekah Laky and Theresa Morrin joined her in double figures with 13 and 11 apiece. The Vikings meet a very good Cherry team on Monday night at 6:30, come on out and cheer on the Vikes.

The Cook County Vikings welcomed the Mesabi East Giants to Grand Marais on a busy night of basketball. With the boys playing host to Greenway, and the girls playing the Giants in 7th, 8th, J.V., and Varsity, all three of the Cook County gyms were in use.

The Viking girls were coming off two nice wins, seemingly playing better basketball, but a huge downer was in store for the Vikings on this night. Both teams traded baskets in a frantic start and halfway through the first half the Vikings held a 16-15 lead. The wheels started to quickly come off, though, as the Giants went on a huge 21-7 run to end the half. The Vikings went into the break down 23-36. The half was marred by terribly sloppy play and numerous turnovers, most being made by the Vikings.

The second half had a very ho-hum feel to it for the first 9 minutes. At the 9 minute mark, down 27-41, the Vikings picked up the pressure and started forcing the Giants into hurried shots and started converting on their end. Junior Theresa Morrin stepped it up in a big way, converting drives to the bucket, scoring all 13 of her points in the second half. With the score at 41-43, the Giants Nikki Arn went left and knocked down a big shot to bring the cushion back to four. The Vikings failed to score on their next 6 possessions and the Giants scored their last 10 points on the charity stripe to ice the win. The loss brings the Vikings record down to 5-6 on the year, with a chance to get back to that even mark tomorrow when they host the Silver Bay Mariners at 4:45.

Mesabi East 36-18 - 54
Cook County 23-22 - 45

The Cook County Vikings didn’t get any rest after the thrilling one-point win against South Ridge on Thursday. The next day, they traveled to Cromwell to take on the Cardinals just 20 hours after the game the night before. The Vikings jumped out to a quick lead behind the first 7 points of the game by Ashley Deschampe. The Cardinals really struggled to handle the ball against the Viking pressure defense and the Vikings ran the court well, building a lead with baskets coming on open shots on the secondary break. The Vikes took a 39-20 lead into the break, with Deschampe leading the way with 19 first half points. Sophomore Jessica Berg-Collman chipped in 7 points, while playing in front of a bunch of her family which is from the Cromwell area.

The second half saw a sloppier half of basketball, with the Cards and the Vikes trading shots and turnovers. Junior Theresa Morrin controlled the boards and senior Bekah Laky knocked down big shots to keep the Cardinals at bay. The Vikings controlled the game with a 68-44 lead with 3 ½ minutes to play when the Cardinals took advantage of the Vikings lackadaisical play to finish the game on a 10-0, a real disappointing finish to a pretty well played game for the Vikings. The Vikings next action is this Thursday when the Vikings play a home game against the Mesabi East Giants at 6:30. The Vikings have home games on Friday, Monday, and Tuesday, too. After being on the road for the most part of the early season, this is an opportunity to catch some Cook County Girl’s Basketball action.
