Minutes of the Old Ski Hill Consensus Committee 9/11/2000
In attendance: Vicki Wenz, Kevin Bader, Cathi Williams, Philis Anderson, Amy Wilfahrt, George Wilkes, Sue Abrahamsen, Bill Hansen.
Meeting convened at 7:10 PM at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts auditorium.
Consensus was reached on approval of the 8/28/00 minutes.
Kevin showed a video tape of a county commissioner candidate forum where the old ski hill property was discussed. Discussion followed.
Work resumed on proposals for consensus.
Consensus proposal #5:
Trails that flow into town. Connections for Superior Hiking Trail. Trail use to include hiking, snowshoe, and dog walking. Create campsites for hikers. Establish Sawtooth Bluff Outdoor Center as proposed in May 1999. (Proposal is on file with committee materials.)
Consensus proposal #6:
Reconsider land trade with State of Minnesota or U. S. Forest Service.
Consensus proposal #7:
Manage property from a forestry management perspective. Large part left as forest. Opportunity for improved forestry. Manage for restoration of old growth white pine and cedar. Utilize old growth for scenery, recreation and sustainable harvest. Compatible with trails and Sawtooth Bluff Outdoor Center proposals above. Demonstration land use areas i.e. wildlife habitat and fen walk. Many parts of other proposals could fit with this proposal. Paved bike trails or unpaved mountain bike trails. Hold specific portions of land for specific time for a specific purpose i.e. a vo-tech school on a certain part of the hill. Establish parnerships with other land managment agencies (county, state, federal, private, education). Think of a name for the area.
Consensus proposal #8:
Same as proposal #1 except remove nordic skiing.
Consensus was reached on a change in the meeting schedule,
moving the existing schedule back one week to avoid conflicts
for several committee members.
Future meetings Oct 2, 16, and 30.
Next meeting October 2nd at 7 PM at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts Conference room.
Respectfully,
Bill Hansen
