Minutes of the Old Ski Hill Consensus Committee 11/13/2000

In attendance: Vicki Wenz, Kevin Bader, Cathi Williams, Amy Wilfahrt, Philis Anderson, Annie Debevec, Sue Abrahamsen, George Wilkes, Bill Hansen. Guest - Kay Costello.

Meeting convened at 4:30 PM at the Fireside Room at the Congregational Church in Grand Marais.

Consensus was reached on approval of the 11/6/00 minutes.

Proposal for consensus #23: Trade or protect upper county land that falls within Fall River watershed.

Consensus reached on proposal #24: The best use of the "Old Ski Hill" property is a location for a variety of recreational uses, rather than housing, resort, or lodging.

Consensus reached on proposal #25: Set aside approximately 25 acres immediately west of the new Gunflint Trail loop in the south east corner of the property (below the bluff) for a multi-purpose learning/interpretive facility such as the Sawtooth Outdoor Center, Boreal Birding Center, digital planetarium, or Moose Center.

Consensus reached on proposal #26: City and county do a feasibility study of a snowboard facility with chalet located at bottom of the hill. Addressing: Feasibility, profitability, markets, aesthetics, location, size, visual impact, lighting, half pipe, moguls, disc golf. After study is complete, consensus committee will revisit this issue.

Consensus reached on proposal #27: Cook County trade or protect lands within the fen and the Fall River watershed.

Proposal for consensus #28: County and city cooperatively: Create a forest management plan compatible with other consensus agreements, managing for recreation and selective harvest as a forestry demonstration project. The goal being return to a pre settlement state. Include non motorized hiking/snowshoe trails with connection to Fen Walk and Interpretive Facility.

Proposal for consensus #29: Environmental assessment of impacts.

Proposal for consensus #30: Develop Fen Walk in partnership with Forest Service.

Next meeting November 27th at 4:30 PM at the Congregational Church in Grand Marais.
