Setting up E-mail

How to manually set up your e-mail
Normally, your email will be automatically set up when you run Boreal's installation CD. However, if you need to set it up manually, here's how you do it:

(NOTE: Once your email is set up, the easiest way to check it is to send a message to yourself. Wait a few seconds and then check your mail. If you have configured everything correctly the message will come right back to you.)

  • In Netscape:
    • For Navigator - Version 2.0 and greater:
      • Click on [Options], [Mail and News Preferences...], [Servers], and supply the following information:
        Outgoing Mail Server: mail.boreal.org
        Incoming Mail Server: mail.boreal.org
        Pop User Name: (login-name)
        News (NNTP) Server: news.boreal.org

Please make sure the "Remove from the server" option is checked.

      • Next, click on the [Identity] tab at the top of the page and supply the following information:
Your Name: (Your Name goes here)
        Your Email: (login-name)@boreal.org
        Reply-to Address: (login-name)@boreal.org

      • Next, click the [Organization] tab at the top and put a check in the box that says Remember Mail Password. If this is done you will not have to enter your password each time you check your mail.

      • Now click the OK button on the bottom of the page and go check your mail!

    • For Communicator - Version 4.0 thru 4.76:
      • Click on [Edit], [Preferences...], on the left side of the screen double click [Mail and Newsgroups], click [Identity] and supply the following information on the right side of the screen:
Your Name: (Your Name goes here)
        Email Address: (login-name)@boreal.org
        Reply-to Address: (login-name)@boreal.org

      • Again, on the left side of screen, click [Mail Servers]. In the box at the top right of the screen should be a line that says "mail.boreal.org". If you see it, click on it and click the Edit button next to the box; if you don't see it, click the Add button next to the box. On the screen that comes up, supply the following information:
        Server Name: mail.boreal.org
        Server Type: POP3 server
        User Name: (login-name)

      • If you do not want to enter your password each time you check your mail make sure there is a check mark next to Remember Password.

      • Next, click on the POP tab and make sure that the box next to Leave messages on Server is unchecked. Click OK.

      • You'll be back on the screen you were at before. At the bottom of this screen, supply the following information:
        Outgoing Mail Server: mail.boreal.org
Outgoing Mail Server User Name: (login-name)

      • Next, on the left side of screen, click [Newsgroup Servers] and make sure there is a line that says news.boreal.org in the box at the top of the screen. If there isn't, click the Add button and supply the following information:
        Server: news.boreal.org
        Port: 119
Leave the boxes at the bottom of the screen unchecked.

      • Now click the OK button on the bottom to close the Preferences screen and try it out.

    • For Netscape Mail - Version 6 and higher:
      • Click on [Edit], [Mail and Newsgroup Account Settings].

      • If you see a line on the left side of the screen that is similar or identical to your Boreal email address:
        • Click on it. Then supply the following information on the right side of the screen:
          Account Name:	(login-name@boreal.org)
Your Name:	(Your name goes here)
          Email Address:	(login-name)@boreal.org
          Reply-to Address:	(login-name)@boreal.org

        • On the left side of screen, click [Server Settings]. On the right side of the screen, verify the following information:
          Server Type: POP Mail Server
          Server Name: mail.boreal.org
          User Name: (login-name)

If these values are not correct, you'll need to delete and re-create your email account with the correct settings. Click the Remove Account button at the bottom of the screen, click Yes when it asks if you're sure, and then proceed here.

If they are correct, at the bottom of the screen verify that "Leave messages on server" is unchecked.

        • On the left side of the screen, click [Outgoing Server]. Supply the following information:
          Server Name:	mail.boreal.org
User Name:	(ok to leave as null, or login-name)

        • Click OK.

      • If you don't see a line on the left side of the screen that looks like your Boreal email address:
        • Click the New Account button at the bottom of the screen. The New account wizard will open.
        • Select "ISP or Email provider" or "Email Account", whichever is available. Click Next.
        • Supply the following information:

          Email address: (login-name)@boreal.org

          Click Next.

        • Click POP to select it. Under Server Name, enter mail.boreal.org. Click Next.
        • Your user name should have defaulted to your login-name. If it didn't, enter your login-name. Click Next.
        • Click Next to accept the default account name.
        • Click Finish.
        • On the left side of the screen, Click [Outgoing Server]. Supply the following information:
          Server Name:	mail.boreal.org
User Name:	(ok to leave empty, or login-name)

        • Click OK.

      • You're set up and ready to check your mail!

  • In Outlook Express (Internet Explorer):
Internet Explorer uses the Outlook Express application to send and receive email. Outlook Express will open up if you select [Tools],[Mail and News],[Read Mail] from Internet Explorer.

(NOTE: On newer computers, Outlook may be set as your default mail program rather than Outlook Express. If you want to use Outlook, go here for setup instructions. If you'd rather have Outlook Express, from Internet Explorer click [Tools], [Internet Options], click the [Programs] tab, and on the E-mail line select Outlook Express from the drop-down box. Then click OK.)
    • In Outlook Express, go to [Tools],[Accounts]. The Internet Accounts window will open. Click on the [Mail] tab at the top of the screen.
    • If you see a line that says "mail.boreal.org" or "Boreal Access" or something similar:
      • Double-click on that line.
      • On this screen, supply the following information:

        Email address: (login-name)@boreal.org

        Outgoing mail (SMTP): mail.boreal.org
        Account name: (login-name)
        Password: (your Boreal password)

Make sure the Remember Password box is checked - this way you won't have to re-type your password every time you check email. "Logon using secure password authentication" should NOT be checked.

      • Click the [Advanced] tab. At the bottom of this screen, make sure the box labeled "Leave a copy of messages on server" is unchecked.
      • Click the OK button to close the window. You're set up and ready to check your mail!

    • If you don't see a line that says "mail.boreal.org", "Boreal Access" or something similar:
      • Click the Add button and select [Mail]. The Internet Connection Wizard will appear. (NOTE: In older versions of Outlook Express, you may not get the wizard. If you don't, follow the instructions starting here.) Otherwise:
      • Type your name in the Display Name box. Click the Next button.
      • If you see a line that says "I already have an e-mail address that I'd like to use" click it. Type (login-name)@boreal.org in the E-mail address box. Click the Next button.
      • Supply the following information:
My incoming mail is a: POP3

        Outgoing mail (SMTP) server: mail.boreal.org

        Click the Next button.

      • Supply the following information:
        Account name: (login-name)
        Password: (your Boreal password)

Make sure the Remember Password box is checked - this way you won't have to re-type your password every time you check your email. Click the Next button, and click Finish.

      • You're done! Go check your email!

  • In Eudora:

      • Type in your name as you'd like it to appear on email messages you send. Click Next.

    • Make sure that the [Send on Check] box is not checked. This keeps Eudora from sending your queued mail whenever it checks for new mail - having this checked could result in mail you weren't ready to send going out anyway!
    • Next on the left side of the screen click [Incoming Mail] and make sure that the [Leave Mail on Server] box is unchecked.
    • Click the OK button at the bottom of the page....All Done!

    • Click [Finish]. You're done!
