Setting Up a Dial-Up Connection

How to manually set up a dial-up connection
  • What's a dial-up connection? The dial-up connection tells your computer how to connect to the Internet - ie. what phone number to dial, what modem to use, etc. It's what generates the "Connect to" box you see when you dial in.

  • How do you set it up? Normally, your dial-up connection to Boreal will automatically be set up for you when you run the installation CD you received when you signed up for Boreal. However, if you ever need to set it up manually, here's how you do it:
      Windows 95/98
      Windows 2000/ME
      Windows XP

    • Windows 95/98:
      • Double-click "My Computer" on your desktop. Then double-click "Dial-up Networking".
      • Double-click the "Make New Connection" icon. The "Make New Connection" wizard will appear.
      • Under "Type a name for the computer you are dialing" enter "Boreal Access". Your modem name should already be in the "Select a Device" box - if it isn't, select it from the drop-down list. Click Next.
      • Under "Area code" type in 218 if it isn't already there. Under "Telephone number" type in 387-9555. Make sure "United States of America" is under "Country or Region Code". Click Next.
      • A confirmation screen will appear saying you've successfully set up your connection. Click Finish. Your Dial-up Networking window should now have an icon in it labeled "Boreal Access".
      • (Optional) To create a shortcut to your Dial-up connection on your desktop, right-click the Boreal Access icon and left-click "Create Shortcut" on the menu that appears. A window will pop up asking if you want to create a shortcut on your desktop - click Yes.
      • When you're ready to dial in to Boreal, double-click the "Boreal Access" icon. The [Connect to] window will appear. The first time you dial into the Internet, you will need to enter your user name and password in this window. Click on the "Save password" box to check it, and you won't have to enter your password again. Click Connect, and you should log on to the Internet!

    • Windows 2000/ME:
      • Click the Start button on your computer, then click "Settings" and "Network and Dial-up Connections". The Network and Dial-up Connections window will open.
      • Double-click the "Make New Connection" icon. The Network Connection Wizard will start. Click Next to get off the Welcome screen.
      • In Windows 2000, the next screen should be the Network Connection type. Click "Dial Up to the Internet" and click Next. This should start the Internet Connection Wizard. Windows ME may skip this step and go directly to the Internet Connection wizard.
      • Click "I want to set up my internet connection manually or connect through a LAN." Click Next.
      • Click "I connect through a phone line and modem." Click Next.
      • Under "Area code" type in 218 if it isn't already there. Under "Telephone number" type in 387-9555. Make sure "United States of America" is under "Country or Region Code". Click Next.
      • Under "User Name" enter your Boreal login id. Don't include @boreal.org. Under "Password" enter your password. Click Next.
      • Under "Connection Name" type "Boreal Access". Click Next.
      • Click "Yes" to set up an Internet email account. Click Next.
      • If you see "mail.boreal.org" under "Use an existing account", select the "Use an existing account", click Next, accept the settings (if they look right), and click Next to finish setting up your connection. Otherwise, click "Create a new account" to select it, and Click Next. Then follow the instructions for setting up your Outlook Express email, starting here.
      • After you finish, your Dial-up Networking window should have an icon in it labeled "Boreal Access". When you're ready to dial in to Boreal, double-click it to log onto the Internet.

    • Windows XP:
      • Click Start, then click "Control Panel".
      • Double-click the "Network Connections" icon. (If you can't see this icon, click the "Switch to Classic View" link in the upper left.) Click on "Create a new connection" in the upper left under the "Network Tasks" section.
      • The New Connection Wizard will start. Click Next to get off the Welcome screen.
      • Select the "Connect to the Internet" option and click Next.
      • Select the "Set up my connection manually" option and click Next.
      • Choose "Connect using a dial-up modem" and click Next.
      • Type in "Boreal Access" for the ISP name and click Next.
      • Type in 3879555 in the "Phone Number" field and click Next.
      • In the next window, type in your username WITHOUT the trailing @boreal.org(same as your email address usually), password (case sensitive), and password again. Click Next.
      • Click "Add a shorcut to this connection to my desktop" to select it and click Finish.
      • Now your Boreal Access will be set up. To connect, just use the shortcut on your desktop. If you want instructions setting up your email, click here.
