Grand Marais American Legion Post 413 will be conducting a Memorial Day Service next to the flagpoles on the County Courthouse lawn at 11:00 pm on May 26, 2014. This brief Memorial Day Service will honor and remember the men and women who died while serving our country. Increment weather plan is for the Service to be conducted at the American Legion Lounge.
Formerly, known as Decoration Day, Memorial Day originated after the American Civil War to commemorate the Union and Confederate soldiers who died in the Civil War. By the 20th century, Memorial Day had been extended to honor all Americans who have died while in the military service. American Legion Post 413 has a proud tradition of honoring our veterans by conducting the Memorial Day Service over the years.
After the ceremony, Grand Marais American Legion Auxiliary Unit 413 will be serving veterans a free lunch of soup, salad and sandwiches at the American Legion Lounge at approximately 1:00 pm. The public is invited and welcome, there will be $5.00 charge for non-veterans.
