Grand Portage National Monument, Now Open Saturdays

Come in out of the cold and stop by the Grand Portage National Monument Heritage Center this winter. The Heritage Center offers many fun and educational activities for you and your family. Visit the Heritage Center in Grand Portage Monday through Saturday from 8:30am to 4:30pm to experience a bit of local history.

The Heritage Center offers a variety of short films on our sixteen foot screen, including the twenty-three minute HD film Rendezvous with History: A Grand Portage Story and three other short films. The Heritage Center houses, over 84,000 archaeological objects, 1400 early 20th century ethnological objects, numerous historical photographs, replica trade goods of the 18th century, and the Park’s administrative offices. A large sample of the historical objects from the collection is on public display.

The national monument also offers winter hiking opportunities. Walk in the footsteps of hundreds of years of history; experience the historic Grand Portage trail, on snowshoes. The Heritage Center offers two styles of traditional snowshoes to check out for daily use.

The Grand Portage National Monument became a unit of the National Park Service in 1958. Created to protect, commemorate, and interpret a reconstructed fur depot of the North West Company, a rendezvous site for international commerce and canoe route for transcontinental, exploration, native heritage, natural scene, and history of cross cultural contact and accommodation between traders, Ojibwe, and other participants in the fur trade.

The Heritage Center is located on County Road 17 (Mile Creek Road) in Grand Portage, Minnesota approximately one mile off of Minnesota Highway 61. For more information, visit our website at www.nps.gov/grpo or call the Park at 218-475-0123.
