SUMMARY:CCHS Community Forum on Career Education & Readiness
LOCATION:ACA Auditorium
DESCRIPTION:The community is invited to attend a Cook County High School Co

reshments will be provided. The focus of the forum is to discuss the futur
e job market locally and in MN\, and how CCHS can best prepare our students
for success.\n\nCommunity input is very important as we plan for our Indus
trial Technology\,\nBusiness\, Family Consumer Science and core curriculu
m programs. Are there\nother areas of career readiness we should be offeri
ng students? What post high\nschool certificate and degree programs will mo
st likely result in employment?\nWhat similar needs do adults have and can
we develop programming to meet the\nneeds of both age groups? What other s
kills are important for our students?\nWhat are our equipment and facility
needs? What can our small district\nsustain?\n\nThe forum will include b
oth presentations and small group discussions. The\nforum will also include
information from Cook County Higher Education. \nProgramming in this area
is especially challenging as CCHS\, students and\nadults do not have close
access to a community college.\n\nIf you have questions\, please contact Pr
incipal Gwen Carman at\ngcarman@isd166.k12.mn.us or Forum Facilitator Pat\n

woodworking project. He'll show you how to draw a room and then see how p
ieces of furniture might fit in it. Or plan a remodeling project.\n\nThe so
ftware Pranis uses is SketchUp\, and it's free (though there is a paid prof
essional version available\, too). And according to Pranis\, Sketchup is mu
ch easier to use than traditional CAD programs.\n\nCook County Higher Educa
tion is offering a four-class course in using the free version of SketchUp
with Pranis as instructor. The course will run 5-7 p.m. Thursdays from Feb.
7-28. Cost is $40 for the course. To register\, email highered@northshorec
 ampus.org or call 387-3411.\n\nPranis\, a PhD chemist\, has been involved w
ith computer applications and programming since 1979. He currently owns Bor
eal Technical Media Services\, which provides technical consulting and te
chnical media (user manuals and marketing materials) for businesses. He has
used SketchUp for more than 10 years in product design\, homebuilding\, re
modeling and woodworking. Pranis also is a member of the Cook County Broadb
and Commission.\n\nThis course requires access to a laptop computer which s
tudents can bring to the classes. Students also will require a mouse equipp
ed with a scroll wheel\, and left and right buttons. Scroll-wheel mice conn
ecting via USB or wireless are available for a wide variety of prices onlin
 e. A good quality mouse is recommended. Brad at Buck's Radio Shack can get
a scroll-wheel mouse for you within a day. If you are interested in the Ske
tchUp course but lack a laptop\, Higher Ed has a small number of laptops th
at you may rent for $25 to use until the course is finished.
