SUMMARY:Really Basic Computing!
LOCATION:Cook County Higher Education
DESCRIPTION:Please pass this along to anyone you know who might find it of
interest:\n\nThis may be the class you've been waiting for if you are curio
us about computers\, think you might like to use one but find the entire t
opic confusing\, intimidating or downright scary. Or perhaps you know someo
ne who fits that description and can recommend this class to them.\n\nJoin
Jim Boyd of the Cook County Higher Education staff from 5-7 p.m.\, Tuesday\
, July 31 for a really basic discussion of how to use a computer. Jim is no
t a computer expert\, and he will not try to make you one\, either. This cl
ass will be more of a conversation than a lecture. No question will be cons
idered too basic.\n\nMaybe you don't even have a computer? Don't let that s
top you. We will talk a little about what you might purchase without breaki
ng the bank.\n\nThis class will focus on computers that run versions of Mic
rosoft Windows because that's what most of the world uses. It will focus on
desktop and laptop computers (you will learn the difference). It will not
cover tablet computers (like the iPad and Kindle Fire). Nor will the class
delve into how to use smartphones. Classes on those topics may come later.\
n\nIf you take this class\, you will learn\, to your delight we hope\, that
the best way to gain computer mastery is to play (yes\, play!) with a comp
uter\, and that if you break it\, the most likely way to fix it is to jus
t turn it off and then back on.\n\nTo register for this class\, call Cook
County Higher Education at 218-387-3411 or have someone email highered@nort
hshorecampus.org. Cost for this class is $20. It will be held from 5-7 p.m.
on Tuesday\, July 31\, at Higher Ed's North Shore Campus\, 300 West Third
Street\, Grand Marais. There is a limit of 12 people for this class. If yo
u have your own laptop and wish to bring it along\, please do.\n\nJim Boyd\

SUMMARY:PAD &W Railroad and Paulson Mine Presentation
LOCATION:Chik-Wauk Museum and Nature Center
DESCRIPTION:\nDave Battistel is a history teacher and football coach at St.
Patrick High School in Thunder Bay\, Ontario. Since 1994 he has been activ
ely researching the history of the Port Arthur\, Duluth and Western Railway
\, as well as its associated ventures (silver and iron mining\, logging) an
d has spoken numerous times about these topics.\n\nTwo dreams. One was a ra
ilway venture hoping to tap a vast\, uninhabited yet rich wilderness in the
area called the new Ontario. The other was a mining enterprise trying to
capitalize on the financial boom generated by the discovery of iron in Min
nesota. While the Canadian Port Arthur\, Duluth and Western Railway and the
American Paulson Mine represented the interests of investors on different
sides of the border\, their fates would forever become intertwined in the c
losing years of the 19th century. The failure of both the railway and the m
ine are certainly an interesting chapter in the history of the Boundary Wat
ers.\n\nMeet on Chik-Wauk front porch. Free and open to the public. \n

SUMMARY:The Beaux' Stratagem - GM Playhouse
LOCATION:Arrowhead Center for the Arts
DESCRIPTION:Don't miss this hilarious comedy! Don't wait til next weekend!
Plenty of seats available this weekend!\nThe Grand Marais Playhouse is plea
sed to present Thornton Wilder and Ken Ludwig's adaptation of The Beaux' St
ratagem by George Farquhar. July 26- 29 Aug. 2-5. Thurs. - Sat. 7 PM and
 Sunday 7/29 2 PM\, 8/5 3 PM.\nTickets on-line at www.arrowheadcenterforthea
rts.tix.com or at the box office one hour before the show.\nThe play tells
the story of two young bucks who\, having spent all their money by living t
oo well\, leave London and roam from town to town in search of love and for
tune. In order to find a wealthy heiress for at least one of them\, they po
se as master and servant exchanging roles from one town to the next. In L
ichfield\, Aimwell is the master and Archer the servant\, and there they me
et the lovely\, wealthy Dorinda and her equally desirable sister-in-law\, M
rs. Kate Sullen. They set their caps for these women\, but problems abound.
Kate is married to a drunken sot who despises her\; the innkeeper s saucy
daughter\, Cherry\, has set her cap for Archer\; Dorinda s mother\, Lady Bo
untiful\, mistakenly believes herself to be a great healer of the sick\, an
d she guards her daughter like a dragoness\; and a band of brigands plans t
o rob the house of Lady Bountiful that very night\, putting all schemes in
jeopardy. This is a play in the great tradition of Goldsmith s She Stoops t
o Conquer and Sheridan s The Rivals and The School for Scandal . It is clas
 sic\, formal\, robust and hilarious.
