the months you are away, with no charges and no re-connect fee, as long as your account is
in good standing.
Boreal Access is a non-profit cooperative. The email
services that we provide are a significant portion of the expenses incurred
by Boreal Access and we must recover some of this cost.
- MultiLink accounts are also available - Please call 387-9471 for details.
Wireless Access Fees (WaveRider)
High-speed Internet has come to Grand Marais!
Wireless Internet gives you access speeds
averaging 256K, and doesn't require a phone line. This
service is available to people or businesses within about a one-mile radius of the hospital
tower in Grand Marais.
- Startup fee - $300
The startup fee includes 1 hour on-site installation and
setup (does not include LAN work), and use of a wireless radio and an internal antenna.
(Boreal retains ownership of the radio and antenna.)
- Monthly fees:
- No resale - $70/month
Includes unlimited access and up to 10 extra email addresses.
- Resale - $105/month
Includes unlimited access, up to 10 extra email addresses, and
providing your customers access to the signal. If you're
using the system to provide Internet access to your customers, whether or not
your customers are paying for this service, you must pay the resale rate.
- Static IP address (optional) - $5/month
- Please note: Your high-speed access replaces your dial-up access, so
the above fees do not include dial-up access. If you need to be able to access
the Internet via dial-up in addition to using the Waverider service, you will
need to purchase a dial-up account (prices)
in addition to your Waverider account. (You don't have to pay an additional
membership fee to have dial-up access.)
Important notes:
- There is a one year minimum commitment for wireless service.
- The use of the wireless radio and internal antenna are included
in the startup fee, and are all many people will need. However,
depending on your location and existing equipment,
you may need to purchase additional equipment, such as:
- external antenna
- extra cabling (depending on the distance from your computer to the antenna)
- an Ethernet network card (if your computer doesn't already have one)
- A hardware firewall is not required, but is highly recommended. Cost
of the firewall is not included in the startup fee.
- You must receive a clear signal from our antenna, located on the tower
behind the hospital, to be able to use wireless Internet. We will check
signal strength before installing. Things which affect your signal strength
are:
- Distance - the signal range is about 1 mile from the tower. This reaches
Tomteboda on the west end of town and Steve's Sports on the east. If you're
outside this area, you probably won't be able to receive a stong enough signal.
- Physical obstructions - the signal is non line-of-sight, but large
obstructions between your antenna and the tower can interfere with the signal.
These obstructions include things like rockpiles and buildings with
metal roofs.
Wireless Access Fees (Line of Sight)
Boreal Access is pleased to offer a new high-speed wireless Internet option.
To utilize this service, the antenna on your site must be able to "see" the
south side of the tower on the Grand Marais hill, or the south side of
the Verizon tower in Lutsen.
(The Grand Marais tower is the 120-ft.non-lighted tower,
which is the one furthest to the east in the tower farm.)
Advantages:
- higher bandwidth (256K, 512K, 1M)
- lower latency
- higher through-put
- static, route-able IPs
Charges:
- Wireless Access fee for leased equipment and one hour installation labor:
(*Plus tax - includes lightning protector)
...Not included: antenna, cabling, connectors, and labor over 1 hour
(equipment and labor varies by location).
- Monthly charges:
- No Resale:
- 256K - $65.00
- 512K - $130.00
- 1M - $199.00
- Resale:
- 256K - $105.00
- 512K - $155.00
- 1M - $255.00
NOTE: If you're
using the system to provide Internet access to your customers, whether or not
your customers are paying for this service, you must pay the resale rate.
- Please note: Your high-speed access replaces your dial-up access, so
the above fees do not include dial-up access. If you need to be able to access
the Internet via dial-up in addition to using the Line of Sight service, you will
need to purchase a dial-up account (prices)
in addition to your Line of Sight account. (You don't have to pay an additional
membership fee to have dial-up access.)
One-year contract required.

Wireless Access Fees (WiFi)
WiFi is in downtown Grand Marais!
Boreal Access members can now upgrade their accounts to include WiFi
high-speed Internet Access in downtown Grand Marais.
Most outdoor areas, including the beach, REC Park, Artist Point, and the
parking area near the Coast Guard Station are receiving WiFi signal. WiFi
access is also available at the Grand Marais Public Library, the Java Moose,
and the upper level of the Blue Water Cafe in Grand Marais, and in the
Caribou Highlands coffee shop in Lutsen.
If the Wifi signal inside your home or business isn't strong enough to
give you Internet access, you may be able to install a bridge router
to bring Wifi access into your building. The router picks up the Wifi
signal via an antenna and uses an ethernet connection to send it to
your computer. The wireless bridge costs about $140. If you need
additional equipment such as a more powerful antenna, the cost will be higher
depending on what type of antenna is required.
If you need to use the wireless bridge and antenna, you may choose to install
it yourself or you may hire an independent installer. Installation
charges must be handled between you and the installer. Please contact Boreal
if you'd like a recommendation for a installer.
If you're not using a bridge router, a computer or wireless PDA with a WiFi
NIC card (802.11b or g) is necessary to receive the signal.
Boreal Access members may upgrade their personal accounts to include WiFi
for Basic or Extended accounts:
- A Basic ($19.95) account with WiFi is $39.95 per month
- An Extended ($35.95) account with WiFi is $55.95 per month
- A WiFi-only account (without dial-up access) is $29.95 per month
All Wifi accounts include:
- Broadband access through the Wifi system, at speeds of 256K and above (Access speeds
depend on the current traffic on the system but should not drop below 256K.)
- Unlimited hours when accessing the Internet via the Wifi system
- Up to three extra email boxes
If you wish to add WiFi to your account, or need additional information,
call the Boreal Access office at 218-387-9471 or email
office@boreal.org.
For information on setting up temporary access to the WiFi system,
please see www.borealaccess.org.
Grand Marais WiFi is made possible through a grant from IRR and funding
from the City of Grand Marais, Cook County, the EDA, and Boreal Access.
Wireless Access Fees (Mesh)
High-Speed Internet is now available to most residents of
Grand Marais!
Boreal Access has installed high-speed Internet service in most of Grand
Marais. Service is available from the downtown
area to 10th Avenue West, to County Road 7, and east to the intersection
of County Road 7 and Highway 61.
The high-speed Internet service operates at speeds six to ten times faster
than dial-up, and no slower than 256K. It is always on; so dialing in is
not necessary. Extra phone lines for Internet dial-up are not needed.
The service is a wireless "line of sight" technology using small radios mounted
on light poles.
Costs:
- There is a one-time sign-up fee of $50.00.
- The monthly charge for the service is $35.95, with a
two-year contract.
- Additional equipment needed depends upon your location in proximity to
the radios, and ranges in price from $50 or less for a wireless network card,
to $140 to $220 for a wireless bridge and/or antenna, plus installation.
If you are unsure of your signal strength or what equipment you need, we
recommend that you hire a professional installer to come and
assess your location, and if necessary install whatever equipment you need.
Contact the Boreal office for names of recommended installers.
- If you want to keep your existing dial-up, the monthly charge is $45.95
for Mesh Wifi plus basic dial-up service. You may only use one type of
connection at a time - for example you can't be using the mesh system at work
at the same time the kids are dialed in at home. If you need to use both
types of connection at the same time you'll be charged full price ($19.95) for a dial-up
connection plus full price ($35.95) for the Mesh Wifi service.
To sign up, call the Boreal Access office at 218-387-9471, or send an
email to office@boreal.org. Make
sure to include your name and physical address of your residence.

form on your website, and can differentiate between people who are interested
in different types of information (ex. winter activities vs. summer activities).

Computer Repair
Boreal provides basic computer repair services. These services include
everything from system troubleshooting to replacing and installing hardware
and software to virus and spyware removal. When you bring your computer
in for repair, you usually only need to bring in your tower - that is you
don't need to bring in cords, the monitor, the keyboard or mouse. However,
it is a good idea to bring in any CDs or diskettes that came with the
computer.
Sorry, but we can't come to your place to work on your computer - you must
bring it to the Boreal office for service. It isn't necessary to make
an appointment.
Computer repair is $45/hour for members and $50/hour for non-members.
