From Cook County - April 17, 2024

Get up, get your blood flowing, and get your neurons firing! Walking or biking to school or work is a great way to start your day!

Walk and Bike to School Day
is just around the corner. On May 8, all students, families, and community members are invited to join the fun by starting their day with a walk or bike ride to school or work on Bike to School Day. We will have two Walking/Biking School Bus routes heading to Cook County and Great Expectations Schools in Grand Marais. Volunteers needed! Sign up here https://tinyurl.com/WBTSmay8

If your student typically gets a ride to school, come in a little early and walk or bike with a Walking/Biking School Bus from one of the starting locations: the Cook County Courthouse (7:30 a.m. departure) or the Community Center Parking lot (7:30 a.m. departure). Students and community members are welcome to join along the route or meet at the starting location.

Join us for light refreshments outside the Community Center entrance to celebrate the event!

Walk and Bike to School Day is one of the initiatives spearheaded by community members like you and by the local Safe Routes to School Committee and Active Living Steering Committee (ALSC), which work to make it safer and more accessible for students to walk and bike to and from school. The Walking School Bus routes take advantage of the sidewalks; several were built after being identified as key for Safe Routes to School and Grand Marais Pedestrian Plan.

Cook County Safe Routes to School (SRTS) strives to improve the health of kids and our community by making walking and bicycling to school safer, easier, and more enjoyable. For more information about Safe Routes to School Bike to School Day or to volunteer, contact SRTS Coordinator Kristina Campbell Mattson at 218-302-1342 or [email protected]. Sign up to volunteer https://tinyurl.com/WBTSmay8.

This work is supported by the Statewide Health Improvement Partnership (SHIP), the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) through Healthy Northland Community Health Board and Cook County Public Health and Human Services.

*Please note that the Safe Routes to School committee, Minnesota Department of Health, and Statewide Health Improvement Partnership (SHIP) work together to encourage walking and biking to school but do not assume liability for anyone’s commute to or from school.
