The Grand Marais Film Society is getting ready for its final screenings of its inaugural season this Saturday, April 20th at 4 pm and 7 pm at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts.

The 4 pm animated family film, features a family trying their best to connect in the age of screens and social media when suddenly they are forced to be humanity's last hope to stop the robot apocalypse! From Furbies to refrigerators, everything with a computer chip becomes bent on destruction in this wild and humorous adventure. One reviewer remarked, “What this film does so well is show how things evolve between parents and children with time. It’s a bond that’s permanent in so many ways but a relationship forever fluctuating with the pushes and pulls of growing up. In it, family life is a brilliant, ever-changing collage.”

“It’s a really fun film with something that everyone can enjoy,” Said Jay Decoux, Film Society board member, “It highlights how indispensable every person is - no matter their flaws or imperfections - and it’s hard not to love a family that’s a little weird.” The family film is sponsored by Carol Winter and Kirk Dornfeld.

The 7 pm film was selected in partnership with the Cook County Pride Committee. “A major theme of this first film season has been that everyone in our community should have a chance to see a part of themselves reflected on the big screen,” said Joe Beres, another film society board member, “And to create opportunities in our community for all of us to enjoy and be challenged by films that illuminate the diversity of the human experience.”

One critic described the 2017 Best Picture as “Widely regarded as one of the most intimate and well-made movies of all time, it is nothing short of a masterpiece, every element coming together to create an experience that can be appreciated by all.” This film is sponsored by the Angry Trout Cafe.

After these screenings, the Film Society will take a break over the summer, and get to work on launching a second film season in the fall.
