Starting this week, the Minnesota Department of Public Safety State Fire Marshall (SFM) division will be onsite at Lutsen Resort to "dig through debris" starting today, according to a press release issued on Friday, March 8.

This is part of an ongoing investigation into how and where the fire started, which also includes reviewing paperwork, such as business and financial reports, and conducting interviews.

“Lutsen community members will notice crews coming and going from the fire scene,” said State Fire Marshal Daniel Krier. “We are dedicated to preserving the integrity of the investigation, and we ask people to give us the space we need to complete this work.”

The State Fire Marshal also reminds people that the site is restricted and secured due to unstable debris.

The fire broke out in the early morning hours of February 6, 2024, after an employee discovered smoke coming from an electrical outlet. There were no guests at the time, and no one was injured. Since then, an outpouring of community support and shared memories have emerged as people reflect on the historic lodge.

Specific details, including the daily investigative actions in this case, cannot be released per Minnesota Statute 13.82 and Minnesota Statute 299.F28.
