For some, it's one of the best times of the year: Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness permit on-sale day. For the 2024 year (May 1 - September 30), outdoor lovers can start making reservations on Wednesday, January 31, 2024 at 9:00am CST at: www.recreation.gov/, by calling 1-877-444-6777, or by reaching out to your favorite local BWCAW outfitter who may be able to assist as well.

Superior National Forest (SNF) Managers share tips to ensure a smooth reservation process, including:
  • Plan ahead: Make sure your group has more than one route option and dates before making reservations, as some portages fill up very quickly. In addition, only reserve what you're 100% planning on using.

  • Check out the SNF website ahead of time to learn or brush up on best practices while recreating in the BWCAW. The internet, guidebooks, and local outfitters can offer a wide variety of information, recommendations, and tips to help.
  • Determine whether the BWCAW is the right trip for your group by visiting the BWCAW Trip Planning Guide. What skill levels does your group bring? Other options include SNF backcountry campsites, which don't require a permit or fee.

From SNF: "The BWCAW is a federally regulated area with regulations and rules that must be followed. Permit holders are responsible for sharing the Leave No Trace Video series with their entire group prior to arrival. Everyone shares responsibility in preserving wilderness."
