There may not be much snow on the ground (yet!), but the Cook County Master Gardeners are already looking ahead to spring. The annual potato and onion community project and fundraiser is officially open and taking orders. Funds raised help support Cook County Master Gardener programs, classes, and workshops for the community.

A variety of seed potatoes, onions, and leeks are available to choose from, which you can find on the order page. Each item has its own minimum quantity, but there is some flexibility in that as well (if you have questions about ordering or are looking for a different quantity than what is listed, you can reach out via the contact information listed below). Exact pricing is not available until all orders have been received; since it is a community order, the more items ordered the lower the price. However, the order page does provide tentative pricing based on years prior.

The deadline to place your order is Friday, February 2. You can find the order form here. You must be a Cook County resident to order. If you have any questions or need more information, please contact: 218-387-3015 or [email protected]

If you're new to growing potatoes and onions, or need a refresher, the University of Minnesota Extension Office has resources here (onions), and here (potatoes). Additionally, Cook County U of M Extension Coordinator Sarah Waddle will be hosting the monthly Northern Garden Radio Show on WTIP from 7:00 - 8:00pm on Thursday, January 11, where she will be talking about growing these items in our area for part of the hour. Or, you can ask a Cook County Master Gardener here.
