CO Sean Williams (Ely #1) reports that after several more inches of snow fell over the week snowmobile activity was occasionally seen around the lakes and trails in Ely. Snow depths were only minimal, and conditions were generally poor to fair. Trout angler activity was lower than previous winter openers. Most people reported concerns over ice depths and unknown snow conditions as giving them second thoughts about attending. Violations included angling without a license in possession, angling without a license, and transporting fish without a skin patch.

CO Brent Ihnen (Ely #2) patrolled primarily for fishing activity this week. He also checked snowmobile and ATV operators.

CO Anthony Bermel (Babbitt) spent the week checking anglers and recreational vehicles. Trout opener was also worked, with plenty of people happy with their catches. Several people were cited for fishing without licenses. Additional enforcement action was taken for angling trout in closed hours and no trout stamp.

CO Thomas Wahlstrom (Grand Marais) checked anglers with CO Fairbanks during the trout opener. Some nice lake trout were seen in the bag. Time was also spent in the BWCAW. Enforcement action was taken for angling and snowmobile violations.

CO Hudson Ledeen (Grand Marais #2) reports that anglers battled the frigid temperatures over the weekend for the regular inland trout opener. Some nice fish were observed being caught and most folks were squared away with the regulations. Ice conditions continue to vary from lake to lake, with some of the big lakes still holding open water.

CO Kylan Hill (Tofte) reports working a very weird inland trout opener over the weekend due to lack of snow and brutally cold winds. Ice ranged from 3 inches to almost 20, with reports of open water still in some places. Activity was surprisingly very high with dandy limits of stream trout checked on easy-to-get-to designated lakes. Violations were at an all-time low. A heads-up to those who want to come to the area to snowmobile: The trails are in no way in good enough shape to ride as minimal snow fall leaves boulders exposed. Wait until more snow hits the area.

CO Don Murray (Two Harbors) worked angling activity during the opening weekend of the winter trout season. Temperatures were cold as in previous years, but many lakes still had much thinner ice than expected. Murray also assisted volunteer instructors with a youth snowmobile safety class where 19 students earned their certificates.

Silver Bay vacant.
