The Grand Marais Film Society is getting ready for its first screening of a new release, on Saturday, January 13th at 7 pm at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts. This film won the 2023 Academy Award for best picture, and features all the things, all the places, all at the same time. This month’s film is sponsored by Boreal Community Media, which aims to keep communities connected. 

“This is our first attempt at showing a newer film that people may not have had a chance to see in theaters when it was released,” said Grand Marais Film Society (GMFS) board member, Joe Beres. “We are hoping to have a good turnout, but it’s a little bit of a risk shifting from more nostalgic family films towards newer films that are for a grown-up audience.”

Following the successful fall and early winter screenings, the film society is on solid footing to begin experimenting with its film selection. “We had fantastic attendance at the first three screenings,” shared Tom Morse, another GMFS board member, “and we’ve had several local businesses step up to underwrite the film season - so we’re hopeful that this will remain a successful endeavor.” Morse went on to add that it would be very helpful if people helped to spread the word about the upcoming film on social media as well as inviting friends. “Just because we can’t share the name of films on social media, doesn’t mean others can’t,” Morse added.

The Grand Marais Film Society is also working closely with the Cook County YMCA to have childcare available for parents to attend the film. “It was really important to the film society board to keep all of our events as accessible as possible for folks in our community. The Y has been a fantastic partner in helping to figure out how to make evening films a reality for parents,” Morse said. Register here for child care.
