The Grand Marais Film Society is getting ready for its next showing, this Saturday, December 16th at 4pm at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts. “This is one of my favorite Christmas films, and this year is its 20th anniversary!” said Tom Morse of the film society.

“Hosting these films has become something we look forward to each month. After last month’s screening, it was so much fun watching people coming out of the theater so happy. These experiences were exactly what we had hoped we could accomplish.” Tom added.

Last month’s screening debuted a new projector and improved sound thanks to Joe Beres’ work. “This new projector really increased the quality - darker blacks and brighter colors truly make this a movie theater-like experience.” Beres shared that the used projector would have cost nearly $40,000 if it had been purchased new, more than 8 times the entire Film Society budget for the year.

December’s film is sponsored by the Cook County Co-op and the movie poster gives a clue alongside the sponsor recognition adding that the “Co-op reminds you the four food groups are not - candy, candy canes, candy corn, and syrup”.

“It continues to be so much fun,” Morse said, “Every time we go to hang up posters for the next film people are eager to figure out the clues, or share how much they’ve wished for a movie theater closer than Canada or Duluth.”

Morse added that the next screening will be January 13th at 7pm. “We’ve played several great family films, but we wanted to show a new release for a more mature audience.” The film society also hopes to share dates with the community for the rest of the film season.
