Grand Marais has an exceptional amount of mountain ash trees. Mountain ash berries are a huge draw for nomadic flocks of bohemian waxwings as they migrate down the shore in late fall. There were several flocks in town this last week. One of the flocks that I was photographing must have consisted of over 500 birds.
Waxwings are a beautiful bird. The bohemian waxwing has a brown patch under its tail feathers and some white in the wings which the cedar waxwing does not. Their name comes from the red on their wings that look like they were dipped in red wax.
