The Grand Marais Film Society is getting ready to announce the dates for the full film season, which will run from October - April after a successful first movie showing in October. If you missed the first film, you're in time for the second screening of the season which will take place on November 12 at 3 p.m. at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts. November’s film features a beautiful princess, a giant, and a dread pirate (due to copyright laws, the film title can only be announced in the organization's Facebook group).

“The first screening was so much fun,” said Film Society board member, Lynnea Morse, “we had over 70 people come to the Halloween film, and many people came in costume. I had several people approach me in town afterward asking about when the next movie would be and hoping that they’d be able to attend.”

In the two weeks following that first event, the Grand Marais Film Society has wasted little time getting set for a full film season.

“Unfortunately, it’s not as simple as just pressing play on the DVD player,” said Joe Beres, Film Society board member, “there’s film licensing, facility rental agreements, insurance, printing posters, and securing sponsorships.” The Film Society recently incorporated as a nonprofit organization and will seek nonprofit status in the coming weeks. “We know it’s important to move quickly to get as many pieces in place as possible,” added Beres. “It’s a lot of work upfront, but these are the structural pieces that will help to make it sustainable.”

The Film Society is experiencing tremendous community support. Local film buff Annie Possis stepped up as the first sponsor, which was followed shortly by the next four: Cook County Co-Op, Boreal Community Media, Guidance Accounting, and Johnson’s Foods. At this point, the Film Society is seeking one more sponsor to finish out the film season in April.

“Everyone I speak with has such fond memories of going to the movies, and we’re excited that we’re able to bring those kinds of experiences to our community,” said Morse, “And by focusing our film screenings outside of the summer season, we hope it’s something everyone can get a chance to enjoy.”

Morse added that a family holiday screening is in the works for December 17th, and then the Film Society will shift towards older audiences for a few films in the new year.
