During the 2023 Minnesota Legislative session, a task force titled the "State Emblems Redesign Commission (SERC)" was created to design a new state flag and state emblem. The current flag and emblem are considered offensive to Native Americans, and do not pass the good flag test, created by the North American Vexillological Association, a group that studies flags. 

Public submissions for a new flag/emblem design are now being accepted by SERC through the end of the month. The Minnesota Historical Society is providing administrative support.
