Bearskin Lodge is preparing to host their inaugural “Gunflint Scramble” mountain bike race on Saturday, October 7th, 2023. Quinn McCloughan, owner of Bearskin Lodge and race organizer, is excited to showcase the area trails with the 20-mile race course.

With over 2,000 feet of elevation, it will be a challenging but rewarding route that is mostly on skiing and snowmobile trails (with some single-track). The race uses sections of the central Gunflint Trail system that are well-known for being world-class groomed ski trails. Lucky racers may be able to witness some beautiful fall colors on the hills between East Bearskin and Golden Eagle Lakes.

Bearskin Lodge also has gotten support from many sponsors to enhance the racer’s experience. The top male and female racers will get a free 3-night stay at Bearskin. There will be many other giveaway prizes from sponsors that will go to random participants including an additional 3-night stay at Bearskin. Various local sponsors are offering discounts to racers. Everyone who finishes will also receive a free doughnut from World’s Best Donuts in Grand Marais.

The Gunflint Scramble race will supplement Cook County’s calendar of big-name bike races such as the Lutsen 99er and Heck of the North. The race will attract competition and provide camaraderie for locals and visitors looking to find a less hectic race-day experience.

There are still open spots available to register online at https://www.tempotickets.com/gunflintscramble23, but racers can also register the morning of the race until 9 A.M. Registration is $45 plus a small fee if done online.
