Forest Service Issuing Free Wood Permits for Select Storm Damage Sites

Duluth, MN – September 12, 2023 – The Superior National Forest (SNF) is issuing FREE wood permits from storm damage in select locations across the forest now thru September 30, 2024.  The following nine (9) SNF Roads/Trails:

  • FR 112 Dunka River Road
  • FR 113 Road
  • FR 130 Moose Line Road
  • FR 383 Bandana Lake Road
  • FR 1491 Deep Lake Road
  • FR 420 Cranberry Lake Road
  • FR 118 Camp 26 Road
  • FR 791 Road
  • Kelly Loop Trail
  • to include spurs of listed roads, if not closed by berm

Free storm damage permits are available ONLY at the Laurentian and Kawishiwi District Ranger Stations for select sites and each permit is limited to four (4) cords.  Year around wood permits are available for $20 at any of the Superior National Forest offices. Please be aware of the conditions of the permit:

  • It is the permittee's responsibility to make sure they are on Superior National Forest lands.
  • Forest products obtained under "free use" are for personal use only and cannot be sold or exchanged. (36 CFR 261.6(f)
  • Permit must be in permittee's possession while harvesting and transporting products.
  • Permit is nontransferable.
  • Permit and activities hereunder are subject to all applicable Federal statutes and regulation, State and local laws.
  • Cross country off-highway vehicle (OHV) use is prohibited. OHV use is allowed on designated trails, low maintenance and unclassified roads only.
  • Permittee shall remove all trash and litter resulting from permittees activities.
  • The Forest Service reserves the right to unilaterally revoke the permit for Permittee's noncompliance with its terms or in the public's interest.
  • The use of tractors, rubber-tired skidders, or similar vehicles is not allowed.
  • ONLY Down trees within 100ft of the centerline of the Forest Service roads listed on the permit are allowed.
  • All firewood products cut must be no longer than 6 feet in length.
  • Trees marked with paint, tags or signs may not be removed but can be cleared.
  • Close any road barricade when leaving if applicable.
  • No rutting or ground disturbing activities.
