Incident Name: August Lake Fire


Size: The fire is estimated at three acres.


Description: The fire was detected on August 7, 2023. The initial suspected cause is lightning. It is burning in heavy vegetation with difficult access. The Forest is using both aerial and ground suppression tactics.


Location: Superior National Forest. Township 61N, Section 17, Range 10W by August and Heart Lakes; approximately 15 miles southeast of Ely, MN. The fire is close to the Prospector ATV Trail; however, there is no recommended change in use currently.


Status: The fire continues to creep on the ground with 1–2-foot flame lengths.


Resources: Aerial and ground resources are responding to the fire. Today, a helicopter will fly in firefighter gear including hose lay and a pump for ground resources to put hose lay around the fire.
