From Care Partners of Cook County - July 27, 2023

Here’s the scoop on August news and events from Care Partners.

Memory Café – Thursday, August 17
This monthly gathering for people who are living with dementia and those who are caring for them offers a safe, supportive, relaxed environment to enjoy light refreshments, casual conversation and friendly connections with others who know the dementia journey first-hand.  Each month we are also joined by a special guest who will share stories, offer their talents, or perhaps encourage us to try our hand at a fun, easy activity! In August, we're happy to welcome The Cook County Historical Society and enjoy photos and stories from our community’s amazing history. The Cook County Memory Café meets at The Hub the third Thursday of each month from 1:00pm-2:30pm.

Death & Grief Café – Thursday, August 24
A Death Café isn’t a place, but an event in which people are invited to express their thoughts, dreams, questions and concerns about death and dying. Paradoxically, sharing about death often inspires participants to embrace a more meaningful life. The Death Café meets the fourth Thursday of each month from 6:30 – 7:30pm at The Hub and is hosted by Cook County End of Life Doulas Pat Campanaro, Nancy Larson, Margy Nelson, Suzanne Sherman, and Jean Skeels.

TWO wonderful Lunch & Learn opportunities in August!
We are excited to partner with our friends at Cook County Higher Education to present  a Lunch & Learn the fourth Wednesday of each month from noon - 1pm at Cook County Higher Education (or you can attend virtually via Zoom.) Lunch is free for the first 20 people who register to attend the in-person class! And in August, there's a BONUS Lunch & Learn!

Wednesday, August 16 - "Pushing Back Against Ageism", noon-1pm

Widespread biases and misconceptions about aging abound – and they can affect our own expectations about growing older. Our attitudes about aging have an impact on our quality of life, health and even longevity. Special guest presenter Brenda Shafer-Pellinen from the Arrowhead Area Agency on Aging will discuss how ageism can influence us, and how we can contribute toward a more positive narrative about aging. Click here to register!

Wednesday, August 23 - "Nutrition & Aging: Eating Right, Eating Well", noon-1pm

Join us for an especially yummy Lunch & Learn as we welcome special guest Annie Albertson, MS, RD, and Grocer/Nutritionist at the Cook County Whole Foods Co-op for over 7 years. She retired from General Mills after serving 30 years in the Bell Institute of Health and Nutrition conducting population-based nutrient intake research among many other nutrition related assignments. Annie loves sharing her knowledge and love of food, and will help us explore key issues around nutrition and aging, and discover resources and practical tips for healthy AND delicious eating. In-person class attendees will also enjoy tasty, good-for-us lunch from the Co-op! Click here to register!

Sunday, August 27 - Ice Cream Social!

Celebrate aging well in Cook County at Care Partners’ Annual Ice Cream Social from 2-4pm at Sydney's Frozen Custard's new downtown location!!!!  Enjoy a delicious frozen custard sundae for a $5 donation, say "hello" to friends and neighbors, and see our beautiful raffle quilt (and maybe purchase a raffle ticket or three!)  All proceeds go to help Care Partners provide support and companionship for those on the journey of aging and serious illness in Cook County.

Save the dates!

Aging With Gusto Series, September 11, 18, 25, 1:00-2:30pm at The Hub

Having a positive view of aging and living our lives "with gusto" make it a lot easier to have healthier, happier years ahead. Let’s talk together about which values and key contributors we want to draw on to lead the most meaningful, satisfying lives we can. We’ll also look at how ageism impacts us - sometimes in surprising ways -and how we can respond smartly. Brenda Pellinen-Shafer from the Arrowhead Area Agency on Aging will guide the discussion, offering thought-provoking ideas and questions to stimulate personal discoveries and small-group conversations. This free, three-session class is presented in partnership with the Arrowhead Area Agency on Aging.  Click here to register

Walk to End Alzheimer’s, September 23, 2:30pm at The Hub in Grand Marais

Care Partners and The Hub are sponsoring a Grand Marais Team and there are several ways you can take part. You can register as a team member and walk with us on September 23rd in memory or honor of a loved one with dementia, as an advocate for a dementia-friendly community, or to show your support for a dementia-free world.  If you'd like, you can also set a personal fundraising goal, and encourage your friends and family to help you reach your target. You can help our Team meet our fundraising goal of $2,000 and make a financial gift to the Alzheimer's Association through our Team page!  Or volunteer to help on walk day! To register as a team member, make a donation, or sign up to volunteer,  visit our team page: http://act.alz.org/goto/grandmarais.
