Fun in the Sun

To get rid of a few of our winter doldrums we had a Fun in the Sun themed week from March 13-17.

Monday one of our residents was busy painting bikinis on cardboard for whoever wanted to enter our bikini parade when she received a phone call. The caller asked her what she’s doing and she nonchalantly answered, “Oh I’m painting a bikini.” The caller has no clue what she’s talking about, but laughed none the less. We painted about 12 bikinis including an itsy bitsy teeny weeny yellow polka dot bikini and two hairy chested speedos.

On Tuesday we painted beach rocks which we will put out in our courtyard come spring.

Wednesday we had a fun filled afternoon tossing around beach balls and playing corn hole. 86 year old Bev Denyes and 87 year old Nona Smith tied for first place with Nona being our big winner after playoffs. Nona scored the highest points possible both games. When asked how she did it Nona replies with her usual laugh, “I did a lot of bowling in my day.”

Friday was our big parade with both residents and staff in brightly painted bikinis. We rocked out to a few Beach Boy songs and a few other oldies. We had a great time complete with Minnesota sushi (ham roll ups) and Malibu pineapple drinks. I asked the residents if they had ever worn a bikini and they all said no.  One resident chimed in and said one time he had to wear his girlfriend’s bikini because something happened to his suit. We’ll just leave it at that.

When it Rains it Pours

As you know we like to eat cookies. This past month we have gotten so many sweets the dentist could be busy for a year. Good thing some of us have dentures. Our friend Barb Wright, who has been without an oven for almost a year, brought us up the best batch of oatmeal raisin cookies we have ever tasted. Our friend Kaleb Klegstad stopped by with beautifully decorated St. Patrick’s Day pudding cups and chocolate cupcakes with peanut butter frosting and our friend Jackie Meyers dropped off delicious chocolate chip cookies.  By the time you read this grandma’s cookie jar will be empty and of course we will need more.

Care Center Comedy

While doing trivia today……….where do flies go for the winter? Without missing a beat Nadine chimes in with “Texas”.  Why do woodpeckers peck on trees? Nona pops off with-“because that’s what they do”. What kind of a bird can dive the deepest? Tom knows the answer. It’s the Emperor penguin. How do you know that? “Because I watch TV”. What countries make up the British Isles? A few residents give input. They say Ireland, Wales, Scotland, and England. How do you know that? “Because we watch a lot of TV”. Which continent has the most countries? Tom and Joyce both say “Africa”. How do you know that? “I learned that in school”, replies Tom. What European country is shaped like a boot? “Italy”. Yes, Tom watches TV.  Through what European city does the Thames River flow?  Tom didn’t know. I asked why not? “Because I don’t always watch TV” and the crowd goes wild.

 Miscellaneous Shenanigans

Beach babes birthdays. Nary was a resident born in March so there’s nothing to report here. We would like to thank the middle and high school choir for coming over and singing for us, Portage Band for playing such wonderful toe tapping music for us, and all staff who showed off their bikinis during our bikini parade. You are all appreciated.

We still have baby finch available

If you would like to volunteer by bringing in treats, stopping by and reading to a resident or playing a game please give me a call.  Lisa Bloomquist 387-3518

Get out in the sun and have some fun, remember we like cookies and old age ain’t for sissies.
