Minnesota House unanimously passes bill strengthening protections for Indigenous families and children

The ICWA is an agreement between the federal government and tribal nations giving tribes the right to take over child abuse and neglect cases from state courts.
But there is growing concern that an ongoing legal challenge now before the Supreme Court, the Brackeen v. Haaland case, could upend these federal protections and threaten Native families in states that have not shored up local laws. Minnesota and at least 10 other states are preparing themselves by enacting local legislation to further strengthen the protections now available under ICWA.
