Free Adult Mental Health First Aid Class to be held on March 3, 2023

Cook County Public Health and Human Services is partnering with Cook County Higher Education to host an Adult Mental Health First Aid class on Friday, March 3, 2023. The course is supported through a generous grant from the North Shore Healthcare Foundation.
The free class will be held at Cook County Higher Education from 9:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Participants must be 18 years of age or older. Prior to the in-person portion of the class, participants must complete 2 hours of pre-work online. The course includes a workbook, access to the Mental Health First Aid course's online portal, (Mental Health First Aid) MHFA certificate, and lunch. The class will be led by instructors Carrie Anderson and Tracy Henegar. Class size will be limited to 15 participants.
One in five American adults experiences a mental health disorder in a single year. Almost half of all American adults will experience a mental illness during the course of their lifetime. More than 20 million Americans ages 12 and older will face an addiction.
Mental Health First Aid for Adults teaches people how to recognize signs of mental health or substance use challenges in adults ages 18 and older, how to offer initial help through a 5-step action plan, and how to guide a person toward appropriate care if necessary.
Topics covered include anxiety, depression, psychosis, and addictions.
Those who successfully complete the class will earn an MHFA (Mental Health First Aid) certificate, which is valid for 3 years.

A separate Youth Mental First Aid Class has been scheduled for Tuesday, April 4, 2023. Details of that class will be announced closer to the date.
