A 35-year-old Michigan man was found dead in 11 feet of water Thursday, Nov. 17, after he had been reported missing earlier in the week, police said.

At 9:55 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 15, deputies from the Baraga County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to a missing person complaint, according to a news release. The L’Anse man hadn’t reported to work that day and was last seen early Monday morning.

On Wednesday morning, deputies noticed a stretch of damaged guardrail on US-41 at the head of Lake Superior’s L’Anse Bay. Officials checked the area and found debris from a crash and what appeared to be oil on the surface of the water.

Around 10:30 a.m. that day, a diver checked the water and found a white pickup truck submerged in about 15 feet of water. The truck matched the description of the missing man’s vehicle. The vehicle was removed from the water Wednesday afternoon. However, no one was inside, and the driver was not located at that time.

The search for the missing man continued Thursday morning with drones, K9 units and divers checking the area where the vehicle was found. At about 12:50 p.m., the dive team found the missing man deceased and submerged in about 11 feet of water.

The incident is under investigation. The victim’s name has not been released.

The sheriff’s office was assisted by the Keweenaw Bay Tribal Police Department, Baraga Village Police Department, Michigan State Police (including divers and K9 units), Superior Search and Rescue, Bay Ambulance, Dynamite Towing and Jacobson’s Funeral Home.
