At the Minnesota State Patrol, we know that diverse perspectives and experiences make policing organizations better.

That’s why Col. Matt Langer, the chief of the State Patrol, signed a pledge last week to increase the number of female troopers and support staff to 30 percent by 2030. The pledge was created by the 30x30 Initiative, a program formed by a national network of police leaders, researchers and professional organizations.

“We know diversity brings value, and more women in law enforcement will strengthen law enforcement and our relationships with the communities we serve,” Langer said.

Women currently make up about 10 percent of the State Patrol’s sworn officers, which is 3 percent higher than the national average for similar agencies. Across the country, only 3 percent of police leadership is made up of women.

Meanwhile, research has shown women officers are associated with more positive outcomes for communities.

Why are more women needed? Diverse perspectives and experiences make policing organizations better. Gender differences are evident in many ways and contribute to a more diverse workforce able to surpass the demands on policing today and into the future.

The State Patrol aims to not only recruit more female troopers, but also to look at its policies and see if anything needs to be changed to encourage more women to step up and throw their hat in the ring for promotions.

“This pledge means we are actively working toward improving the representation and experiences of women officers in our agency,” said State Patrol Lt. Col. Rochelle Schrofer. “We’re committing to growing a culture that is inclusive, respectful and supportive of its female troopers.”

By taking part in the 30x30 initiative, the State Patrol is committed to:

  • Taking measures to increase the representation of women in all ranks of law enforcement.
  • Ensuring policies and procedures are free of all bias, including gender bias and discriminatory practices.
  • Promoting equitable hiring, retention and promotion of women officers.
  • Creating a culture that is inclusive, respectful and supportive of female officers.
