A group of local women hopes a dance and music video they’ve just produced raises awareness about violence against women, especially the disproportionate rates of violence against BIPOC women.

The original work is called “Do You Think You Protect Me?”

Produced thanks to funding from the Arrowhead Regional Arts Council, different artistic disciplines come together.

The artists want to draw attention to the lack of safety for women and the need for accountability from men.

The songwriter is also a journalist who has covered this issue, and says she’s calling men out.

“And not just men we would consider violent, but men that perpetuate the culture of violence. So, it’s about attitudes and the way that you see women and speak about women and interact with women,” Emily Haavik, the songwriter, said.

The video release and concert takes place from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday, September 23 at Earth Rider Brewery in Superior.

All proceeds from this release concert after paying the bands will go toward the Native Lives Matters Coalition and their current awareness campaign.

That includes their Red Dress Public Art display, a quiet form of advocacy honoring lost and missing loved ones.
