Firefighters in Superior spent much of Saturday battling a blaze at the landfill near Wisconsin Point.

According to Superior Mayor Jim Paine, the fire was a fairly large but routine fire at the landfill.

As of 8:30 p.m, Saturday, authorities said the main body of fire had been extinguished, but crews remained on the scene covering smoldering materials with sand.

According to authorities, the smoke conditions in the area have improved greatly.

They are asking the public to avoid the area, as there is increased truck traffic from fire suppression efforts.

There have been no injuries to fire department or public works members.

The cause of the fire is currently undetermined.
