District 6 - Two Harbors Area.  From the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources - February 28, 2022

CO Sean Williams (Ely #1) reports some of the heaviest snowmobile traffic of the winter was seen in the Ely area over the weekend. Overall compliance was high but snowmobile speed continued to be problem. Violations included failure to display current snowmobile registration, operating a snowmobile with no safety certificate, and snowmobile speed.

CO John Velsvaag (Ely #2) checked anglers and snowmobilers this past week. He also worked primarily snowmobilers in the Grand Marais area for a day and spent another day on and around Lake Vermilion. Velsvaag also observed several areas with litter after fish house were removed.

CO Thomas Wahlstrom (Grand Marais) checked anglers and monitored snowmobile activity. Fishing success has been slow. Snowmobile trails are in excellent condition. Enforcement action was taken for snowmobile and angling violations.

CO Mary Manning (Hovland) patrolled snowmobile trails and riders. Lake activity was slow and slush was a problem for some anglers. Manning answered calls on possession permits, angling and proposed legislation.

CO Anthony Bermel (Babbitt) worked primarily snowmobile trail enforcement throughout the week with the continued high traffic and good trail conditions. Time was also spent checking anglers and skiers. Enforcement action was taken on several riders for exceeding the snowmobile speed limit. Other enforcement action was taken for angling with an extra line and no ski pass.

CO David Schottenbauer (Silver Bay) worked area angling and snowmobile activity again this week. Trails are getting hit hard with heavy traffic, while angling pressure is winding down for the season.

CO Kylan Hill (Tofte) reports finishing a background investigation for the upcoming Academy. Snowmobile and sport fishing activity was worked and angler activity is very low. Those who were checked reported very few fish. Time was spent on the snowmobile and it is at that point in the year where all registration issues have been resolved. One operator was cited for speed. Hill wants to thank riders for operating safely on the trails this week as it was a very busy week for snowmobile activity.
