Summertime will be here before you know it, which means time to start booking those resorts, lodges, and even campsites north of the border. Canadian resorts and lodges are gearing up for more U.S. residents to travel north this year. Some resorts may have openings this year while others may not, due to booking from previous years.

“People who booked for 2020, the first year of the pandemic, have had most of their deposits rolled over into 2022", says Gerry Cariou. So they were rolled over to 2021 because they couldn’t come, and it only opened on August 9th, last year. So, the deposit for the people scheduled to come before August 9 of 2021, was also rolled into 2022.”

Gerry Cariou is the Executive Director of Ontario’s Sunset Country Travel Association. The Canadian border opened to “discretionary” travel after being closed for almost 18 months. People are crossing into Canada to visit but not at a high rate as before. To cross the border, travelers must currently present a negative molecular (PCR) test 72 hours before their arrival. 

Soon, travelers will have the option of presenting a negative result from a rapid antigen test.

Andre Langdon is a lodge manager at Forrest Lodge in Armstrong, Ontario. “The PCR test can be a little frustrating because we cannot sometimes get the test done quick enough to get across the border. So we're kind of suspended at the borderline. The new test will be fantastic for both sides of the party,” said Langdon.

A negative antigen test conducted no more than 24 hours prior to arrival at the border will take effect starting Monday, February 28th.
