The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency has issued an Air Quality Alert for portions of the Northland. Residents in Northern and Central St. Louis, Lake and Cook Counties may be affected by smoke and fine particle pollution. The Air Quality Alert is in effect until 3p.m. on Wednesday.

The Greenwood fire continues to burn in the Superior National Forest in northeast Minnesota. On Monday the size of the fire was estimated to be 8,862 acres with no containment. There are also fires burning just across the Canadian border in Quetico Provincial Park. These fires continue to burn as well with no containment.

The winds are expected to change through Wednesday near the fires. As the wind direction changes smoke from the fires will impact Cook, Lake, and then the Northern and Central portions of St. Louis County including the Iron Range.

Smoke may briefly impact the Duluth area, but is expected to remain largely confined north of the Twin Ports.

People with lung diseases, including asthma, heart disease, and children and older adults may have difficulty breathing. If you are in the sensitive group, you should limit your time outdoors, and close windows.
