The Neighborhood Youth Services program will see another day after fears of closing down with the Hills program.

Life House, a Duluth non-profit announced Friday they would be taking over the Neighborhood Youth Services program so together they can continue their very similar missions.

"We want to continue that, especially in the young people, get them young teach them the right things. You know to keep them off the streets," said Pez Davila, Program Director NYS.

Life House officials stressed the importance of youth programming, especially after the pandemic.

"All the struggles that exist in the last year we don't fully know the impact of the pandemic looks like," said Jordon Johnson, Life House's Executive Director. "And to ensure people and families know that these services are here no matter what is vital."

The NYS program offers tutoring, food, clothing, and other support to roughly 700 kids between the ages of 6 and 18 each year.

Meanwhile, Life House's programs support 14 to 24-year-olds who are homeless.

Collaborating the programs is believed to make more of an impact.

"If we can kind of help support work happening at a younger age, 5 and up it potentially will reduce them coming through our doors at a later age," added Davila.

The NYS program is held at the Washington Recreation Center. NYS officials say they are grateful to continue their work with kids and teens who need it most.

"To provide that stability for them and a place that's safe for them every day, that's what it's all about," Davila said.

Currently, the NYS program is searching for a new way to transport kids to and from the program as the van they used was owned by the Hills.

The City of Duluth also worked with Life House to sign a new lease so NYS can continue to rent the space.

The Hills Youth and Family Services plans to shut down all of its programs by next Wednesday.
