The U.S. Forest Service said lightning ignited a wildfire near Hassel Lake in the Boundary Waters. It is currently estimated at about 2 acres.

Hassel Lake is about 10 miles northeast of Tower, Minn. It is west of Burntside Lake and Crab Lake.

Firefighters report they flew over it Friday and saw "moderate fire activity." A plane made a few water drops.

The Forest Service says the area is away from any lakes or portages, so it's too difficult to access on foot.

So far, one plane and one helicopter have been assigned to the fire. They'll continue to fight it from the air.

Smoke from the fire could be seen from Highway 169/1 between Tower and Ely, according to the Forest Service.

On Saturday, the Forest Service announced closures of the following portage trails, lakes, and campsites which are posted closed as of 12:01 p.m. Saturday:

BWCAW Portage Trails Closure

  • Crab Lake to Clark Lake
  • Crab Lake to Saca Lake
  • Glenmore Lake to Schlamn Lake
  • Little Crab Lake/Creek to Lunetta Lake

BWCAW Campsites and Lakes Closure

"These emergency restrictions are necessary for the public’s health and safety due to wildland fires in the vicinity of the affected lands, waters, trails, portages, canoe routes, and all recreation sites. These restrictions will remain in effect for as long as they are posted onsite and until terminated by the Forest Supervisor," the Forest Service said in a news release.

The Forest Service says it is prohibited to enter the listed trails, lakes, and campsites.

Violation of the prohibitions is punishable by a fine of up to $5,000 for an individual or $10,000 for an organization, or imprisonment of up to six months, or both.
