At a board meeting Tuesday, Dec. 1, 2020, the Alliance for Automotive Innovation, a big industry trade association, recognized that change is coming. Alliance CEO John Bozzella said automakers are committed to working with the Biden administration, which will renew the fight against climate change and likely will undo pollution and gas mileage rollbacks made by President Donald Trump . AP Photo/Damian Dovarganes, File

Finally. The sun is out and so are Minnesota travelers.

"I think a road trip seems like the safest route. Chicago, Duluth, Wisconsin Dells," said Kevin Klassen from Eden Prairie.

"I don't mind driving and you're in complete control of the situation," he said.

A lot of travelers might be thinking the same way.

Meredith Mitts with American Automobile Association (AAA) Travel says many travelers will still opt for road trips this summer, and that travel insurance and cancellation policies are playing a bigger role in plans.

"A lot of travel will be domestic and to closer destinations," she said.

2019 was the busiest summer for travel since AAA started tracking numbers. No surprise, 2020 was the slowest.

"This year we are about 60% above where we were last year with 37 million travelers hitting the road for Memorial Day weekend, but that is still 14% lower than 2019," Mitts said.

Some are still opting to stay put.

"The only reason we are not traveling yet is that our kids only have their first dose of the vaccine," said Alexa Kelly from Minneapolis.

Others are making up for the lost time. Tam Le from Coon Rapids just returned from Hawaii and is road tripping to Montana later this summer.

"I've been cooped up for the last year and a half going crazy. You can only play video games for so long and work from home for so long... so it just feels like a sigh of relief," he said.
