Despite a dry farming season, Northland berry farmers expect a good strawberry season.

Strawberries are already sprouting after much-needed rainfall, putting a smile on farmers' faces.

"The recent rain really helped a lot," Steve Schulstorn, owner of Spectrum Farm Strawberries said. "I have been irrigating every day for the past three weeks. It was really, really dry."

However, Schulstorn is bracing for another cold night on Saturday.
He said he's hopeful though since the strawberries survived the latest freeze warning.

"It looks like a good crop, we've got another cold spell tonight and if we get through that one I think we're gonna be fine," Schulstorn said.

Other farmers like Brenda Erickson, owner of Rocky Acres Berry Farm in Bayfield, says she isn't as worried about strawberries.

"We always seem to have enough water for strawberries if our ponds are full, it's the later crops that get hurt when we run out of water," Erickson said.

Berry farms were quite a hit last year, but this year is expected to be even better with the loosened COVID restrictions.

Strawberry season is expected to start mid-June into early July.
