Friday was about final goodbyes to a beloved conservation officer. Sarah Grell died in the line of duty on Monday. The 39-year-old leaves behind a husband and three children, along with many friends and other family.

Her funeral was in Grand Rapids. There was a horse-drawn caisson, an honor guard, and many broken hearts.

The DNR estimates about 2000 people attended. Governor Walz was one of them. He also directed flags to be flown at half staff on Friday.

On Thursday, he spoke briefly about her loss. "We want to extend our heartfelt sympathies to the DNR, and the family. It's very hard. Those who know much about the DNR, know they are truly a family."
